Question for Sal about sharpening serrated K390

#1

Post by TheGiant80 »

I’ve got a Sharpmaker and the accompanying DVD. I haven’t got to the point with my blades where I need to use them yet. I also have a serrated K390 Endura in-bound. I know you (Sal) address sharpening serrated blades on the DVD, and I was wondering if any additional technical info is needed in order to sharpen a crazy super steel like K390.

Hey Dan,

funny, I just replied to a pm of yours, and among other things I said there I´d search for a thread I made once asking about serrated K390 and send you the link - might as well do that here... ;)

Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

Hi Giant,

I use the fine stone corners with no problems.

Hey Dan,
Great idea getting the sharpmaker! Light pressure is your friend.
I've learned a lot about sharpening SE blades from Vivi's post, which is excellent

Also our local Lee Valley store carries sweet pocket microscope, which i highly recommend getting

So it appears the Leaf Jumper is ground to around 17-18 DPS. At least in VG-10. So, I guess you will need to resharpen at 20 DPS or try to lock it in at the 17-18DPS by feeling the angle. Anyone try to reprofile at 15DPS for SE on the SM with K390? I want to replace my lost LJ so I'll go with one of my favorites K390 in PE or I may dare to replace it in SE K390, but I'm concerned I will not have the patience to get it reprofiled.

Hey Jeff, i dropped the bevel angle to 15degrees on endura4 k390 gifted by Dan while ago (thanks Dan!!!). I used chainsaw file conveniently positioned in the brown rod groove

Interesting! Thank you. I know it can be done, but seemed time consuming even with VG-10.

Nice approach!

But did it actually also hit the small / narrow scallops properly?
