I Like Cats

Never thought I would say that. This little knife just arrived, and I can't find a thing I don't like about it - with earlier 440C steel, obviously unused, I just stropped and it's very sharp. The ergonomics are great for those small jobs. Mini Sage 1?

No Canis in the house, so there should be no problems.

There are at least a couple of us on the board who share your enthusiasm for the Cat. I think that it’s possible that it is the most under appreciated knife in the Spyderco lineup. I’ve had the same well carried and used 440c version for several years and it’s still a solid knife that is a slicing machine.
Do right always. It will give you satisfaction in life.

That would have been a very fun Tom and Jerry situation.

I literally ordered one a few minutes ago because the summer sale. Being a fan of small knives, it's intrigued me for the longest time. I'm glad to see it wasn't a mistake to pick one up. I'm also looking forward to trying BD1N, hope the Cats are a good example of the steel compared to Golden's version.

Count me as another huge fan of the Cat! It might even be in my Spyderco top 5, I like it that much!

I carried one in 440C exclusively for around two years when I wasn’t such an avid collector, then I lost it one night out with friends. I think it was swiped from my pocket while I was in a crowded bar. I eventually replaced it with another 440C version. I’m tempted to buy a BD1N version as well or better yet, one of the originals in carbon fiber! It’s a really great design, definitely one of the current sleepers in the lineup.

I have several non-Golden Spydies with the BD1N. I've not found anything to detract. The CAT is a fantastic knife. Gave my first one away to a relative. Had to buy a replacement.

I love my Cat. I've made a few threads about it over the years and there are a lot of fans of this knife. Mine is 440C and has jimping top and bottom, both. I got it just to have a travel knife many years ago. It was inexpensive so I fingered that if I lost it I wouldn't cry over the dollar amount. Well, I was really surprised! The knife was very good and had good materials and great fit and finish. I carried it a lot and it is a great performer, too. Thanks for bringing this up. We need more Cats and I would like to see a return to jimping on these little guys (though some people don't like jimping).

Remember: The Cat's where its at!

Else, wherefore born?" (Tennyson)

Cat was my wife's first Spyderco. She carries a Dragonfly or a Delica mostly now, but still takes the Cat out occasionally.

Mine does not have jimping - I prefer it, but this one holds real tight in my hand without it.

I will add that I bought this knife NOT knowing that it was a Cat. It was listed on ebay with a low BIN and looked unused and quality, and I did not have any 440C knives, so I grabbed it and figured out later what model it was. This will get carried any time I'm out and about and have no knife usage plans. If I run into a stranger who complains about having something in his eye, I'll pull it out :squinting-tongue

The Cat is a pretty cool kitty. I still have my old 440C and I picked up a BD1N backup when they came out. I like and use them both. Sweet little liner lock that punches above its' weight.

Wow…had to look the Cat up and it looks awesome as does the Alcyone…two models I can see in my future and it would be my first Spyderco liner lock which is the lock I grew up using 👍

Both are really excellent designs, as is the Polestar. All 3 are great designs that just don't get much attention sadly. You could legitimately argue the Polestar is better than the Tenacious. Hope that starts a discussion :winking-tongue

"Golden's version"? To the best of my knowledge this knife has always been made in Taiwan. Do you know of a USA version or is this just supposition?

He was referring to “Goldens version” [of BD1N]. Not the knife itself. :bug-red

Are your Alcyone an Polestars made in Taiwan or China? I've seen them marked China but the Spyderco site has them listed as being made is Taiwan. Unfortunately I wasn't able to grab either one during the sale but the Alcyone is def on my list.

I have no idea but the Polestar has been on my list ever since I saw a photo Jeff posted a while back…and I saw the Alcyone when I looked up the Cat…BD1N is so easy to get wicked sharp plus I’ve never encountered rust on my Manix 2 lw and I carry it in my WB in the Georgia humid hot summers…they’re all three no-brainers

The Polestar is marked China and Spyderco's website says China. It is a fantastic model. I do wish the linerlock was as secure as the Military. A little sloppy.

The Cat was my first venture into the Spyderco world and still love the little thing! Just a great 5th pocket fit and the BD1N holds up very well for my use.
