Why not DLC on all non stainless blades ? :winking-tongue
Just my 2 cents, and true in my use and climate! Ymmv! :smlling-eyes

- Because one of the big appeals of tool steels to me is exactly how nicely they "patina", show wear and use and the "life" of a knife.
Also gives each piece a totally unique and individual look over time.
As a matter of fact I am thinking about REMOVING the coating of the blade of the M4 Goddard I´ll (hopefully) receive soon.

- Because in MY use coating of a tool steel blade would make no sense at all: They never rust or patina in a way that could weaken the blade even in the slightest, at most some discolorations and tiny spots are what happens.
And the very EDGE itself can´t be coated anyway obviously
Perhaps coating just the pivot area where it can´t be seen would make a bit of sense, anything else :NO in my book

- No idea if that is true (I´d rather think NOT), but some people say that coating adds a tad more "resistance" to a cut.

- It is easier to find a knife with a shiny blade than with a dark one when dropping or loosing it in the outdoors.

- So, in my use and case, coating a blade would just add unnecessary cost.
Top three going by pocket-time (update April 25):
- EDC: Endela SE (K390). Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10), Chaparral SE (CTS XHP)
- Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Endela SE (K390)

all blades should come in dlc and satin. there's nothing wrong with being tacticool. sometimes it's nice to have a less noticeable blade in everyday use, whether it's stainless, non-stainless, or stain-proof.
keep your knife sharp and your focus sharper.

I don't buy coated blades. Just never liked it.

I love knife forums and how picky we are about every little thing - you learn tons through such thinking; however, the one thing that makes me scratch my head is how people are so concerned about non-SS blades rusting, pitting, getting spots. A fun aspect of collecting knives is obtaining really old carbon steel ones from the 1940's or older (or newer), and restoring them - you can grow to really enjoy the characteristics of old steel.

While I love Magnacut because the blade is just so beautiful and I don't have to worry about forgetting to clean it, I might like Maxamet even more because it has so much character, yet the Spyderco blades are still executed perfectly, so the character looks even more appealing.

Do we have any "Show your naturally aged blades" threads?

It actually does in certain cases. I find substantially more drag with dlc when cutting apples for instance

Thanks, interesting!

Due to my preference for non coated blades I actually have not much experience with coated ones, and probably none with particularly DLC (from the top of my head right now I own just a black bladed Tenacious, but that´s not DLC obviously, and an Esee Laser Strike that´s coated - also not DLC of course. All other knives of mine have uncoated blades I think).

Yep! I probably wouldn’t have known if I didn’t regularly cut apples for myself at work. I don’t have the same drag with other coatings such as benchmade’s cerakote on the freek or tenacious’ black oxide. The matte finish on the spyderco dlc definitely has an effect. Id imagine the polished dlc of something like acold steel wouldn’t have the same effect

I have no interest in coated blades, and won't buy 'em.
