I know the Merlin and Harpy have hawkbill blades, but does anyone know if there are any other Spyderco built hawkbills?



Also, does anyone have any non-Spydie Hawkbills they like???

The Civilian and Matriarch can be called hawkbills too. Just a mather of definition.

I and my wife have a total of four Hawks a.k.a. Ladyhawks from Masters of Defense. We each have an Emerson LaGriffe, and I have given several LaGriffes as gifts. My Blade-tech Master's Model Karambit folder, Emerson Kerambit folder, and fixed blade Strider/Tarani HS Karambits and Strider/Pirela Operator are in the hawkbill category, although they are usually considered "claws" by their owners. Yes, I like Spyderco too, and have a pair of Civilians for backup weapons and there are at least three Harpies around the house.

Only non-Spydie-hawk I have is a Kershaw Talon. Pretty sweet. Just a touch bigger than a Merlin,less pronounced curve,ATS-34 steel,G-10 handles. Got it from SMKW a few years ago on special 'cause I didn't have any G-10's in my collection. Never seen it anywhere else,I can only assume it's been discont'd.

I had never thought of my Kershaw Talon as a Hawkbill, but it is a sweet knife you have there, dynarider. Those are indeed discontinued, and quite collectible now, at least among fans of the pikal grip.

well...I have been happy with the performance of my S&W Badge knife. It's cheap and if I break it, it's no big deal. In other words, something that's expendable, NOT like ANY of my Spyders!

To be honest, I don't care much about Spyderco's hawkbills. I like Graciela's Ladyhawk (MoD). The Microtech Kestrel is OK too. And yes, I love the Tarani folding Karambit.

Is the red handled Harpy a SS model with a custom scale? It looks nice!

Count me as another of Graciela's fans. I have owned one of MOD's Lady Hawks for 2years now and it's one of Mrs Java's favorites.

If we're counting the Civilian by definition then that opens up the whole realm of reverse-S blades yielding mini-Hawkbills in the form of Meerkats, Dodos, and the host of SPOTs now available.

I don't mean to offend or insult anybody, but I just don't understand hawkbill knives. They look cool, but is there any real purpose? They look ideal for certain specialized purpose, but I like a good general purpose knife. I'm sure you have reasons for liking them so well, and I wish you would enlighten me. Thanks

They're good for cutting rope, water hose, stuff like this. I don't think they'd make for a good general utility knife. You can't even make a sandwich using one of these <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

I like Wharnecliffe-type blades for all-around utility, and hawkbill-style blades for times when it is good to be able to place the edge on an object, and then cut by pulling back toward myself or downward. Both can be quite good for "MBC" purposes. The only time a knife blade actually needs "belly" is for skinning and some kitchen uses, IMHO.
