I believe that only the "show" sample is with M398 steel. I hope not, but I think it will go with less exotic steel if it ever goes to production. Magnacut will be just the right steel for the design.cjk wrote: ↑Mon Jun 05, 2023 4:12 pmI was so intently staring at the knife that I completely missed that there were words to read. Re: Upcoming P.I.T.S. 2
I'm not too concerned with steels these days, but M398 seems good fit for this type of knife. Overkill in most regards, but so is the design on a whole.
There will be hordes of magnacut hitting the market, in platforms better suited to make use of it's balanced prosperities.
M398 should be more than stainless enough for most environments this type of knife is likely to see, and for most slip joints and very small knives I value edge retention over toughness. I have no prior experience with M398 and there are quite a few other steels that I think would be equally or better suited, but I assume it will be made in Europe, so M398 seems like a fitting choice in that regard.

Hahah, if I export more knives to France I'm sure DGSE will have me flagged in some kind of register I don't want to be in :)Ramonade wrote: ↑Mon Jun 05, 2023 12:43 pmI'll be there if that Techno 2 would happen to have trouble finding a new homeaicolainen wrote: ↑Mon Jun 05, 2023 12:05 pmI suspect EU pricing will be a mouth full, but if the specs adds up I can see myself letting go of both the Techno 2 and the HH Urban to help pay the bill.
I kinda feel the same thing about the PITS sprint run. There was a lot of things really making it special, ad it pulled me in almost to the point of buying it. However there's some stuff that I did not like (it's a given for any knife) and the price stopped me.
However, I really regret not buying one during the online 2nds sales ! It was my first 2nds sales and I never hoped for it to happen online after covid so I panicked and bought other stuff
...on a more serious note, I'll probably end up selling it anyways, but a PITS 2 could speed things up. I don't need it and have hardly carried it, but it was a knife I wanted for a very long time - way before it was made by Spyderco, when I first came across Slysz's Mouse 2. So even if it didn't turn out quite as I hoped, there is a sentimental attachment to overcome :)
Re: Upcoming P.I.T.S. 2
I agree. The M398 mule is holding up exceptionally well and has great edge retention, I think it would be a perfect fit for a knife like this. Overkill in ways, but for what the price of this knife would be (guessing around the price of the P.I.T.S. sprint) you would want it to be somewhat overkill. Plus with the P.I.T.S. sprint being M390, it makes sense that the next "gen" would be related with M398. The P.I.T.S. M390 is in my pocket today and it's just an awesome non-locking tank of a knife with holes in it. I would instantly buy the P.I.T.S. 2.aicolainen wrote: ↑Tue Jun 06, 2023 1:34 amI'm not too concerned with steels these days, but M398 seems good fit for this type of knife. If the section of the blade that looks like it is missing was a sharpened cutting edge, that would be different.Mushroom wrote: ↑Mon Jun 05, 2023 8:13 amI agree, large departure from the previous design. In my opinion, this one leaves room for desire, especially in comparison to the original.
My biggest hang up is that the knife is intentionally missing the blade tip! It looks like it is pre-broken.
It’s an interesting handle design. I think it’s cool how it incorporates the locking mechanism into it.
One observation I had is that the slipjoint mechanism itself almost looks like an upscaled version of the original PITS slipjoint mechanism. Looks like it was upscaled and positioned in the center of the handle opposed to the top.

Re: Upcoming P.I.T.S. 2
That would be an interesting choice. It wouldn't be safe to have any exposed cutting edge when the knife is closed, so it makes me wonder if that portion of the blade is completely covered by the handle when it’s closed. We would have to see the knife when it’s closed to tell. Unfortunately, that would count as a double edge and make it illegal to carry in some places as well though.mongo1958 wrote: ↑Tue Jun 06, 2023 10:08 amIf the section of the blade that looks like it is missing was a sharpened cutting edge, that would be different.Mushroom wrote: ↑Mon Jun 05, 2023 8:13 amI agree, large departure from the previous design. Good point about the closed condition. Regarding the double edge, what about the tonto blades? are they also considered a double edge? For me it doesn't matter. I have a weapons carry permit and I live in GA.Mushroom wrote: ↑Tue Jun 06, 2023 10:47 amThat would be an interesting choice. Re: Upcoming P.I.T.S. 2
my least favorite thing about the pits is the holes in the handle. my second least favorite is the large ricasso. this looks like it solves both issues and still has a unique lock. i might be in on one of these. looking forward to seeing how it's fleshed out, or at least seeing more photos.

I like the new lockspring. I’ve been pinched by my PITS and it looks a lot less possible in this version.
I strongly prefer the original, neutral handle shape and blade shape.

Does anyone have pictures to post of the Alien on which this is based?

I don't want to say too much about the Spyderco version other than it will not be exactly like the one at the show (or my own version) and will probably have more of a curve down to the blade tip - a bit like the Techno I guess.

Thank you Mr. Read! I don't have an Instagram account, so I cannot see the pictures. Hopefully someone can grab on and pso here, if that is OK?
Thank you for designing a knife (Spyderco P.I.T.S.) that seems tailor made for my hand! I'm looking forward to the final version of your latest collaboration.

There you go.
Re: Upcoming P.I.T.S. 2
WOW I want that. First time in a long time a new design seriously speaks to me. If it's got a darker tint like it appears here as well, hoooo boy. 10x more appealing than the og for me, which I liked the looks of already; blade shape is perfect - almost a spey, which I've been on record suggesting is a great idea - not too much choil/handle forward design, oh yeah. If it's priced similarly to the OG though, I doubt I can justify it, same as the Techno - I've wanted one for a long time but there is simply no reason to buy a knife that expensive at this point and will never pull that trigger unless I came across a used one for half the price. If this is cheaper, I'm guaranteed in.

It’s a prototype. As Mike says, even the tip of the blade is liable to be rounded a bit.Tristan_david2001 wrote: ↑Wed Jun 07, 2023 1:19 pmHuh, first I’m noticing the flat angle in the Spydie-hole. Kinda weird
