Mexican blanket/Serape is the best micarta change my mind.

Post by Kevinim82 »

At 4x the price of a regular piece of micarta and structurally not as sound as a normal sheet of the stuff… I vote for Pedro… err Mexican blanket micarta for the micarta to rule them all!

Lots of opinions can divide us here on the forum… like best knife steel, or tip up v. top down (yes this typo is on purpose,) unicorn poop v. Doughnut sprinkle… why make a difficult decision, when the easy choice is right in front of you!

If you own a spydie wrapped in Mexican blanket micarta, please use this space to share with the others that it is in fact the best aftermarket scale material in the world!

I like it. Wish I owned some. If I did, I'd probably never put the knife in my pocket, just carry it around in my hand so I could look at it all the time.

This is more my style, at least in the color layout. There's a certain color gradient I like with this idea and it reminds me of all the blankets you used to see covering wore out seats in hotrods.

I think I'd like it more if the scales were thicker like a Shaman, and the colors were layered normally and the handle was contoured to expose the different colors, then a solid color on top. Should retain the usual strength this way too.

I gave my dad the spydiechef with this pattern. It is pretty nice too. He reports he keeps it handy in his cargo pocket err… sock drawer!

Hahahahha!!! Glad I didn’t share any abstract expressionist paintings with you guys! “Does my Jackson Pollock tie go with these knife scales?”

Dads knife. He was in the Army in El Paso for a while. It reminds him of second chances with life, and his courtship with my mom/his wife.

He is more of a Mark Rothko type of guy. 😜

I like g carta depending on the pattern, but according to a chat I had with the trm/Halpern guy, they encounter lots of voids and delamination during the manufacturing so they gave up on it

The guy who made the two pieces above glues a 1/16 inch of g-10 as backing to hold it all together, sorta bypassing the issue your sharing.

Those Spydiechef scales look great, in my opinion. Been wanting a knife with Mexican blanket micarta for awhile. Never seen it on a Chef before. Where did you find them?

That looks good but regular canvas micarta in different colours still looks better to me. However I’m not really attracted to flashy variations of anything in life; I’m a less is more kinda guy.

Impressive, but I can't say I'm fan. I'd probably like something similar more on a fixed blade, but it still wouldn't be my choice. Nice to have a piece that is unique though, makes it feel much more your own.

I don't generally trust linerless Micarta to be strong enough. I acquired a Bugout with micarta scales at one point and it was scary. If the Crucarta PM2 is any indication, Spyderco agrees.

Sorry but I have to make some clarifications. Looks like you have a handle made from SILIBI G-Carta made by G L Hansen & Sons (the G standing for Gregg). A woman named Mikie puts alot of the patterns together and Gregg does all of the processing/finishing. One type of G-Carta they make is Mexican Blanket. Happy Easters.
