Is there a specific reason for the shape of the Wharncliffe blade?

Great video. Thought I had watched or read pretty much everything on this, learned something new. I love Wharnie's, not necessarily about the personal protection aspect but just in general. I think Spyderco should offer a Wharnie option on just about everything.

As far as I know folder originated in 1820’s and was named after patron of Sheffield who suggested the design . Originally was used for woodworking. MG2

you're welcome. i've really come to enjoy a wharncliffe because i do most of my cuts suspended, as opposed to on a flat surface. it's really nice for whittling too.

a great compromise though is a blade with a slight belly and a more negative angle. spyderco is great at these. good examples would be the manix, sheepsfoot caribbean, and endura/pac salt, to name a few of my favorites.

Now I realize that Yojimbo2 could also be a very good user for most of my daily mundane tasks. Why took me so long ?! High hollow grind and wharnie is the winning combo in my book. It’s time to hunt a few sprints !

Cutting in space

I only like belly for cutting on a surface. For daily tasks other than kitchen the warnie is by far most useful for me

Also why I like the Endura family in general as the blades are almost warnies

The Yojimbo 2 is one of the very few models I don't have one of that I'd still like to get ... SOMEday. IMO, it's a genius design, and there are chores for which I prefer wharncliffe-style blades.

I never seen or understood the popularity of the Wharncliffe blade and the dislike of tanto by some. Considering they both have no belly. And neither one slices better than the other with all things being equal. At least from my experiences. But I like a few Wharncliffe styles regardless.
I need to pick one up soon.

i like both for different reasons. one reason people might like a wharncliffe and dislike a tanto is that the wharncliffe has a very fine tip that is usually low vs the tanto's typically thick and robust tip that is high. the wharncliffe is superior for detailed cutting and the tanto is superior for harder, tactical use. i'm sure you know this, but the very different tips might be the reason for the wharncliffe being popular over the tanto in an edc role. and neither is great cutting on a surface. but the wharncliffe is typically still a better slicer because it tends to have thinner geometry.
