magnacut gb2 salt

#1

Post by ladybug93 »

the gb2 has been catching my eye lately as a good all-around folder design. i'm wondering if anyone else would be interested in seeing a gb2 in a more salty configuration with titanium liners (with a steel lock interface like the brower) and clip, magnacut blade, and od micarta scales.

GB2 and M4 are inextricably linked in my mind.

Saying that, I'd buy what you're proposing ladybug without question, as that setup is much more ideal for my situation than the current variant is.

Interested! I've also been eyeing the GB. Seems like everyone that has one thinks they are awesome. Would love to try.

In general, I would like to see the GB2 get a spirt run or two.

Gayle Bradley’s history with M4 would make me want to know how he feels about putting a different steel in any of his designs. Respect would call for that, I’m thinking.

i am completely ignorant of this history, so i mean no offense at all. it just seems like a classy design and a great, standard pocket knife that would possibly gain popularity across a wider audience with a more well-rounded steel. not dumping on m4 (this time) and not even meaning to lift up magnacut as necessarily better. i may actually try this knife out in it's current configuration, but i'm just daydreaming about what would make it more appealing to me, and potentially others.

what do you prefer about the gb1 over the gb2? i've never handled either of them, but i've been looking at them a lot in pictures. at least visually, i prefer the gb2.

before anyone thinks i shouldn't make suggestions about a knife i've never handled... i've handled enough knives to know what i like and what works for me. i can tell i would like this knife without ever needing to hold it first.

I think it’s an interesting idea, I agree that the GB2 is a great knife and as you put a good all around folder design. I’m not trying to shoot down this idea by any means but I have a number of general questions.

Would micarta be an optimal material choice for a Salt series knife? Micarta can get wet but can it withstand the elements to the same or comparable standards as a material like G10?

Does adding the steel lock interface contradict the idea of making it a Salt series in the first place?

Would a Salt Series GB2 replace the current GB2 in the catalog or be offered along side it? I’m of the impression that design collaborators have some influence as to what materials are used on their knives with Spyderco. First, I would question if Spyderco is willing to add the knife to their Salt Series but I would then question if Gayle Bradley wants his knife to be added to the Salt Series.

Never handled the GB2, but this is why I absolutely loved the GB1, and was disappointed in the changes made for the GB2:

i actually thought about this a bit when i was posting. my idea wasn't necessarily to make a salt knife originally. i thought a more balanced steel would be nice and magnacut comes to mind first in that realm right now. i've also got crk on the mind and i like titanium, so that felt obvious to me as well. with those two elements, you're already getting into the neighborhood of a salt model. it's been mentioned quite a few times here already that people want magnacut knives, even if they aren't considered part of the salt line. my request is basically in line with that thinking, but i threw salt in there anyway because of the materials.

for your questions, specifically:

i honestly don't know about micarta... i just wouldn't want it to have to be g10 just to call it a salt. i think micarta is a nicer material and would be great on this knife. i think it would be much more attractive than the g10/cf offered currently. i suppose people could just switch it out with aftermarket micarta scales though. oh man... i'm probably going to upset some people with this, but some caribbean style g10 might actually be amazing. *ducks tomatoes*

for a steel lock interface, i was thinking along the lines of whatever they are using for the magnacut native salt. i know spyderco takes great care in matching steels between blades and locks, so i assume they have this figured out now that the native is out. otherwise, a ti lockbar is fine, but i thought it would be more appealing to people who like to complain about lock stick.

as far as offering the gb2 in different materials, it wouldn't be the first collaboration that got new kicks. the kapara got new materials with grey g10 and 20cv (iirc ?). the lum tanto just got an exclusive run also. i'm sure there are others, but i don't have the mental capacity to think through the entire catalog at the moment. but one thing i'm definitely am not trying to do is take away from the current gb2. i'm not asking to replace it at all.

How about a GB3 with MC and a different lock, assuming GB is open to any of that?

I'd love to see a semi-salt GB3 with a modified lock and MagnaCut. I'd also be cool with just putting some MagnaCut in the regular GB2, although I'll still say the lock could stand to be a bit more comfortable to use. I love my regular GB2 but I still have to be careful living in a humid/wet environment.

I really strongly dislike the sharpening notch (aka giant snag point) on the GB2, and the GB1 doesn't have it so that's really all I need but the GB1 is one I always went back and forth with buying but never did, and if they did a run in MagnaCut I'd cave.

I tried to avoid that whole Magnacut can of worms because you included “Salt” but without that it would bring up another question that I’ve brought up in the past. I call it a can of worms because I understand how contrarian it is to even pose the question but now that Spyderco has declared Magnacut as part of their “Salt Series” I believe they will need to very carefully consider how and when they use the steel. I would question if they’re willing to use Magnacut in a knife that’s not fully part of the Salt Series? Will Magnacut be limited to the Salt Series only, such as H1 or LC200N is?

I suppose some of these are questions only Spyderco could answer for us, but I still think they’re worth considering.

yes, i agree. exactly why i hesitated to call it a salt but ultimate just went with it. it would be nice to see magnacut outside of the salt series (like in a g10 manix, for example). lots of people are making magnacut blades now and not calling them rustproof (as far as i know), so i kind of wish spyderco hadn't painted themselves into that corner. that is, of course, unless it's not actually a corner for them and they are able to deal with whatever fallout might come from having a steel in the salt series being used in non-salt models. at any rate, i'd take one of these as a salt or not and i'm even open to different steels. i'm probably just going to get it in m4, but i still think my suggested version would be amazing.

yeah. i know that we were all surprised to see magnacut get a salt classification when the native was revealed and we've been asking the question ever since with no answer. i'm guessing spyderco won't use a steel classified as a salt steel outside of the salt series because of issues it would cause for them. and i know a few of us have mentioned wanting knives in magnacut whether they are considered salts or not. i guess we'll see what happens.

It's even bigger than just Spyderco if you think about it. This might be a stretch but there are a bunch of companies making MagnaCut knives now and any or all of them could get some kick back from users expecting them to be fully rust free "because Spyderco said so" etc etc. Of course it's not Spyderco's place to set standards in the industry and they certainly don't have any accountability for what other companies do but the cards have been revealed all the same, Spyderco have played a part in setting an expectation for the steel and the potential issue of selling it in non Salt models is already happening.

Magnacut is officially included in their Salt Series according to the 2023 Product Guide.
