Help with Wegner problem...

I've owned a large combo Wegner for quite a while now and while I love he design (not as much as if I'd bought a plain edge, but combo was all I could get) I never carry it because I just can't get used to tip-up carry. I have fondled it a lot and have never wrist snapped it open (its always been too tight to do so). I finally got a brainstorm (OK I'm slow sometimes) and decided to remove the clip and carry it tip down in cordura sheath. I carry my Starmate or my Millie that way most of the time anyway.

I got it out today to take off the clip and when I opened it I noticed the locking liner travels all the way to the opposite scale even with a moderate opening. It seems to lock up tight (it is a Wegner and a Spydie) but I'm really concerned and don't want to carry or use it if this can lead to lock failure.

Does it have to go back to Spyderco for a fix? Is it something I can fix myself?

Now that I've figured out how to get it into my carry rotation I hate to lose it, even temporarily <img src="sad.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>

Unfortunately, the Wegner doesn't have an eccentric pivot, so there's not a quick fix.

Spyderco's policy has been that it's not a problem unless: blade play develops, the lock fails, or the liner gets stuck and you can't close it.

I'd try the spine-whack test every now and then to see if it closes and occasionally check for up-and-down blade play when it's locked open. If you see any of those things, you'll have to send the knife in for repairs. Otherwise, there's really not a concrete problem; the knife should still work fine and I don't think Spyderco would do anything with it if you sent it in.

This has been brought up before. It seems that it is within specs as long as it doesn't develop blade play.

I have had several people mention the liner travel, but none have experienced any problems.

Hi Ishay. It is as Cerulean (& others) mentioned. If blade play develops, there is a problem, if not, then Don't worry about it.
