Make salt/marine series even better

#1

Post by macdaknife »

I am a big fan of SPYDERCO salt series. Recreating and working on the ocean most of my life I never owned a knife as resistant to saltwater as the salt series. Even if it was a reported high grade stainless purchased at greater cost it would show surface corrosion, in some cases overnight, if I didn't take the time to flush or clean the same day. I'm not event talking full submersion but just possible splash during fishing or boating. With the salt series I have swam with them no issue. With that said it would be even more awesome to add some added features or products. Such as a salt series with a marlin spike. Or a salt series set of fishing pliers.

There was a model with a marlin spike called the Tusk, but it was discontinued. https://www.spyderco.com/catalog/detail ... trade-/859

Pliers would be cool.

This is a great idea!! I would be really into salt series pliers, fillet knife, multitool, fish gripper, descaler and believe it or not nail clippers which is commonly used for line cutting.

This is alot of new designs and R&D though

i'd also like to see a salt with a wave opener and a finger ring. those could easily be used to make a self defense salt, but the wave and finger ring would also make it easier and faster to deploy the knife in the water in case of emergency. the finger ring could also be used to tie a lanyard for retention or to hang from a pfd with a carabiner. just a thought since the current salt scales prohibit these aftermarket upgrades.

macdaknife, in case you haven't seen them, 5x5 offers a marlinespike that replaces the backspacer on a delica, but you wouldn't be able to use it with a salt model, so i'm not sure that's much help for you.

I’d like to see other models made into salts.

Like a Sage 5 LW in green or yellow and LCN200N

I’m always open for new Salt models. The Manix prototype hopefully will be released this coming year . Specialized models sound interesting . MG2

the manix is a definite buy for me, but i just found out i might be working somewhere with a 3" rule, so i'd be all over a sage 5 lw salt too. it's really dumb to have to worry about a half inch of blade when it's not even sharpened.

Imo, the best “Salt” knives are the Caribbean, and the Siren.

Buy a Caribbean and a Siren, (if ya don’t have em already). You’ll be glad ya did, even if you live and work exclusively in the desert, like me. 😉

How about some fishing scissors in LC200N?
I have the Gerber Neat Freak Saltwater Fishing Scissors on my boat in a ziplock bag but they are still rusting.

First , sincerely hope your move goes well . Yes a Sage would also be a nice downsize model in Salt . I need to handle one a next show I go too especially a lightweight. Dan

it's like a native-sized manix with a comp lock and taichung quality. it's great. no lefty version though. sorry, brother.

I'd be interested in an updated Tusk, even as I worry that the complexity of the model would probably drive the price up.

I love the Siren and the Salt 2/Tasman Salt. Never got a Caribbean though because I am not a fan of the scale color.

Don't want to buy a whole bottle of rit dye that I will only use once.

A Salt multitool is an interesting idea, probably an extremely expensive one but interesting. I bet there would be some real problems with galvanic corrosion since so many tools are making contact with each other. Like all multitools though, for me it would come down to tool layout more than anything else. I don't work in salt water but I do work in every other type of weather and I get soaking wet more often than I care for, and my Victornox Spirit has never rusted. I've been carrying it for about 12 years without a single issue.

Maybe it's just me, but I rather like that Spyderco never fully entered the multitool market. I always carry a Spyderco knife proper in one pocket, and my Leatherman Surge in another. They are two very, very different tools. Sure, the Leatherman has a knife but when I need a knife, I reach for my Spyderco. When I need another tool, I reach for my Leatherman.

I definitely don't want to see Spyderco attempt to enter the multitool arena.

victorinox does a very good job with corrosion resistance. I soak my victorinox spirit in saltwater all the time. Little signs of tarnishing but it still opens and functions really well.
