pocket serration sharpener

#1

Post by sethwm »

Want to sharpen serrations on the road. Thinking I could use the pocket medium stone and sharpen on the corner of it, or the slip it which has a nice angled side, but it’s fine and I feel like medium would do better on the road.

Golden stone seems to big for pocket carry? Plus it’s fine grit. Maybe the webfoot if it’s pocket sized?

Recommendations?

Seems most serrated Spyderco blades are made from tough but relatively soft steels like H1 or LC200N. Hard use will roll the edge a bit. In the field I carry a small steel to realign the rolled edge. Got 'em a long time ago so I don't know who currently makes them. Maybe Victorinox. 3" and weighs around .43 oz. Diameter of around 1/8 inch. Or you might find the Klein screw in handle 3" model more to your liking. Sharpening and removing steel usually isn't necessary and can be done when you get home if you want to. I seem to be in the minority here, so perhaps you may prefer something more like a Diafold for field use.

Just one medium grit sharpmaker rod is too big?
You could deliberately break one in order to get smaller pieces, but that's not a "nice" solution somehow...
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

I was thinking this same thing.

Lansky makes a pocket medic that has a diamond rod for sharpening serrations. It works, too.

I've carried a Goldenstone in my backpack but it's a bit heavy. I'm waiting for the Webfoot to come out which should be lighter. Until then I would carry a single diamond or CBN rod.

I wonder if the caps on that rod will fit Sharpmaker rods?

Yep,
That is exactly what I was going to suggest too.
Roughly four inches long, and specifically designed for Spyderco serrated knives...

I tried to sharpen my spyderedges with that Lansky rod and it didn’t work well for me. Don’t ask me why tho…

I figured it would shatter. How do you break it?

Sorry about that. Product is named Spyderco Double Stuff 2. Buy from reputable dealery (e.g. U.S.- Spyderco, Blade HQ, Knifecenter etc. Europe - Lamnia, Boker, Lamnia etc.).

Oh awesome. I wonder that’s not displayed in their listing of all sharpeners…

I actually never did myself, just read that people do.

But if you hold like half of the rod firmly in your enclosed hand and try to shatter the half that extends out of your hand, the part in your hand should stay intact, I figure?

Or if you´d fixate (perhaps even just with your palm and the weight of your upper body) half of the rod on the plate of a table, let the other half extend over the edge of the table, and then hit that half with something like a hammer in order to break the rod: Again I figure that at least the half on the table should stay intact.

Will not look necessarily nice though, I guess ;)

But perhaps folks who did actually break rods (deliberately or not) could chime in... ?

Before Vivi comes to this thread, I'm going to tell you the lightweight secret: a piece of sandpaper. You just need a corner to fold it.

Another vote for the Doublestuff 2. I use it to touch up my Spydie Edges all the time. Great combo of CBN and Fine Ceramic and the angled edges are perfect for SE blades. Has a nice leather slip case as well.
