SMOCK 2: would you be interested?

#1

Post by Haunted House »

With the Smock having some polarizing features (huge blade choil), and some features that many didn’t like or weren’t interested in (carbon fiber handles, S30V)…

How does a Smock 2 sound? Let’s say…

1. They got rid of the exaggerated sharpening choil

2. Handle scales changed to micarta or traditional textured G-10

3. Different blade steel. Cpm-Cruwear, Magnacut, M4, K390, etc.

How does that grab you? Thoughts?

I would be very happy if they just stuck to the original design of the choil in the SK23. As for other steels we already have M4 and I guess we'll be seeing other exclusives of this.

I thought the large "sharpening choil" was to get the blade around that button lock.

The Smock SK23 is also a button lock.

Story checks out. No choil here.

I don’t mind the size of the choil as much as the shape. It snags.

I’d love that fixed as well as magnacut!

Spyderco hasn't ever update/modify designs by outside designers on their own as a company, at least as far as I remember. If you want the choil gone, you will probably need to get Kevin Smock to update the SK23 first, then convince Spyderco to make it.

Smocks actually have been released in 20cv, m390, satin m4, and TiCn m4! Along with varying handles materials for each, except both m4s are jade g10. But the design has remained a constant between all and most likely we will just see new exclusive steels/ handle materials!

I think Smocks have FANTASTIC "fiddle factor". Would buy a Smock 2 depending on what improvements? have been done
to it. Out of my 80 plus Spydercos , Smocks are my favorite fiddlers.

I would be interested in a Smock 2 if the blade choil looked closer to the one in Danke's photo.

The odd-looking choil and my fear of having a button lock folder accidentally close during use are the main reasons I've never gotten a Smock.

Have you tried the smock? The button does not have a hair trigger, it takes quite a bit of force. and in my normal use it’s the fleshy part of my hand that makes contact and I couldn’t engage the button that way if I tried.

Agree on the choil needing to look like the picture. It’s got too steep of an angle on the spyderco version, which snags.

Without any sharpening notch, maybe, but I'm mostly just interested in the lock. If they made a button compression lock Shaman I'd buy.

Sadly, the closest store where I can handle one is three hours away. I do have two other button lock folders from other manufacturers though, so I'm becoming more confident with this lock type. Thanks for the feedback re hand placement and lock characteristics :)
