Isn't the UpTern a remix of a Caly Jr?

Which *can* be had with lovely FRN scales....just sayin'.

The UpTern is an upgraded version of the Byrd Tern - https://www.spyderco.com/catalog/detail ... -Black/679

Though you make a good point, it is very similar to the Caly Jr.

It’s crazy, it’s like a Spyderco-sponsored clone of a SS Calypso Jr.

I ordered one. Even though 8Cr isn't my first choice in steel, I'm looking forward to this one.

I’ll need to use mine more to get a real feel for it, but my initial impression is that it’s not quite as comfortable in my hand as the Caly JR. I think it would be perfect for someone with medium to small hands.

Just received mine and it feels good in the hand. It feels substantial with that weight even though it's a small knife. 4 way clip is awesome! The grind on mine is perfect and it is pretty well centered.

Since there are no screws or pins, how are they assembled together? I'm just curious...

Hi VipeX,

They are pinned. The scales are finished in such a way to hide the pins.

My UpTern arrived yesterday. I'm quite pleased with this one for the money.. it's very well done. F&f is fantastic, especially where the lock bar meets the scales.. perfectly flush in both the open and closed positions. Lockup is as solid as any Golden backlock I have. Impressive.

Always liked the brushed metal handles of these Stainless steel Spydercos of Byrds. Glad it’s not an extinct practice.
I just like the elegance of it.

Without the boye dent does the blade wiggle a bit when you really clench down on the handle?

In some of my grips*, yes it does wiggle as the lock is partially disengaged. Normal light to medium cutting grip for me does not engage the lock bar. I guess the very vocal anti-Boye dent group won this round.

*hammer grip and reverse hammer grip.

No, not likely (based on my sample at least). The lockbar has quite a bit of tension behind it.. a good deal of force is required to depress it vs other backlocks. Also, the knife's positioning in a normal grip (using the choil) puts the lockbar access just at the base of the soft meaty area of the hand where the thumb meets the palm.. the way the knife fits the hand (mine anyway - XL glove), there simply isn't enough directed pressure on the lockbar to depress the lock. These factors work in tandem to mitigate any wiggle in a normal grip.

I can force a very slight wobble if I adjust to an awkward grip behind the choil, rotate the handle inward a bit, and purposely direct the the full pressure of my grip at the lockbar. I really have to try at it to force the wiggle, and even then, I can't come anywhere close to disengaging the lock.

Used in a normal grip, I don't see lockbar wiggle ever being an issue on this knife. I know everyone has different hands, so I'm not saying it's impossible.. but it would be highly unlikely, imo.
