Clip not holding on slick-scaled delica

#1

Post by Spydeefo »

My Delica has the packawood scales and it falls out super easy in front pocket (found on floor and car seat). My basic Q is, "will the lynch Nw standard clip fix this issue?"

Background: I put a piece of 3m skateboard tape on there and now it holds 100% but is really hard to pull out and I would bet it is tearing (abrading) my jeans each time. I tried rubber grip tape and it also held really well but because inferior brand the tape adhesive doesn't hold well at all (I don't want to glue the tape onto the knife).

I talked to guy at lynch Nw and he said the long clip which is listed as fitting delica is long so that the clip will "land" on the "landing pad" of the frn delica. He said it's fine to go with shorter standard clip due to no landing pad on my knife. He was thinking shorter is better in the sense of less chance to snag on something. I'm thinking shorter may be better also in terms of tighter holding? (Maybe not, just a guess).

Thx for any thoughts! Cheers!

The Lynch clips generally have a very nice level of stiffness from the factory. I think the idea of the shorter clip being naturally stiffer is probably a decent one. I'd the spyderco standard length LynchNW clip a go and if it doesn't work well on this knife well it's a great clip to have around anyways.

The first thing I would do is tighten it up by changing the bend. Remove the clip and decrease the FIRST bend, the one closest to the screws. Hold the clip in a vise, and then grasp the area above the bend with a pliers that fits properly. Be gentle. It's a nice knife, a nice clip, and you don't want to get all hamfisted with it.

If the Lynch clip doesn't clear it up, I think you're on to something with the grip tape idea. They do make non-abrasive grip tape.

I'd try just as RustyIron said, I've bent steel and titanium to my liking/needs before, with success.
:respect In the collection :respect : Lots of different steels, in lots of different (and same) Spydercos.

My short lynch clip is very tight. I don't have a smooth scaled knife to test it on but I strongly suspect it would hold that Delica pretty well.

Updating this thread. I have had the lynch short (standard) clip on the packawood delica for two days now in jeans coin pocket and front pocket. It has fallen out zero times. That a huge improvement considering with the standard clip it fell out twice in one day. I'll keep an eye on it but so far this seems to have solved it!
