Thanks guys. This is my first experience with spotting, although I’ve had some slight discoloring before. I’m gonna let it ride. :yin-yang
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Gidday Hans. I see you are from the land down under. BCF is stocked at Coles. Near the Ajax powder (which is pretty much the same thing. At least by my use).
Thank you mate! No worries, I’ll go raid my local Coles. 👍

After I wasn't able to put a patina on my Rex 45 Manix, even after cutting fruits with it, I really was surprised, how corrosion resistant Rex 45 seems to be for me. I don't like to keep my blades oiled and clean all the time, so I was ready to start a little experiment with my personal corrosion resistance of Rex 45 and decided to put it in my pocket during a 4 hour bike ride. Weather was not that hot, somewhere around 22 °C and no real climbs. All in all, a soft ball for a bike ride, but still a bike ride.
This is the result:

The part of the blade, not covered by the scales, had brown rust on it. Nothing too bad, as the rust could be removed with the hard part of a dish sponge.
I guess I just have to work a little harder on a patina for the future.

I just want to give an update on my Rex 45 Manix 2.
The blade has darkened a lot overall. Here is the color of the blade in contrast to the stainless anvil.

Not that easy to show the difference on camera. I would say it is something between the two pictures.

The blade has a few spots. Again, hard to show, but you get the idea.

Here and there I got some red rust but nothing, that wasn't easy to remove with the harder side of a kitchen sponge.

As an experiment, my S110v Manix LW has been my swim shorts knife for years of yard work followed by soaking in the pool, and despite straight up abuse the blade looks great. I think this was the 4th year in a row it's lived in my swim shorts all summer, remaining wet for hours/days in the shorts pocket hung up after swimming. We own a pool and a hot tub so its fully submerged and left wet almost every day during the summer. The spring and ball are fine (btw), but the backspacer is covered in surface rust. I hope Magnacut will do as well or better because S110v isn't my favorite edge, but its been better than LC200n and H1 in this specific situation for me. Still hoping for that Manix2 LW Salt!

Pics of S110v after 4 years of swimming in the pool/hot tub, left in wet shorts after:

After 30-60 seconds of fingernail/thumb rub:

Inside was a little more difficult, so I used a flat head to get in there, again only 30-60 second attempt:

FWIW, my 15dps reprofile held up as well as rest of the blade, with minor touch ups through out. S110v loses it's fine edge pretty quickly IME, but it does continue to cut for a long time... I just prefer a tool steel type edge (M4, K390). Hoping Magnacut lives up to the hype!
Next time try this: Use a Q-Tip and some Flitz to clean it. It's quick and it will shine it up a bit too. I use Flitz to clean stubborn powder burns on the SS cylinders on my revolvers. It's amazing stuff.

FYI Rex45 is also called HAP40, which is quite common in some expensive hand made Japanese kitchen knives. I think they are usually stainless clad, but still the exposed HAP40 is not reported to rust, just patina. so I would not expect Rex45 to have rust issues, just patination used in the kitchen.

It depends. If you wipe the blade down in not too much time after you cut "corrosive" stuff, Rex 45 does fine. But if the last thing you cut was a lime and you forget to clean the blade for over 1.5 hours, it will rust, don't ask how I know :woozy

Uncoated liners VS coated. Bits of rust on the uncoated, none on the coated.

Anyone think Bar Keepers Friend will get this out? I spilled some bleach on the blade--long story--and forgot about it for a half hour or so. Tried to buff it out with a Dremel and buffing compound but this is where it sits. I don't care enough to sand it out, so if BKF doesn't help I guess I'll just live with it and consider it character.

I'm guessing it was the chlorine in the bleach that did it. Nasty stuff. I still gotta open up the knife and get it off the internals too.

In my experience BKF does not fully remove patina. I love a good patina. I say keep it as is. Looks great!

I decided to see if I could even it out by forcing a patina. I just don't like the uneven patinas because in the past it have kind of mistaken grime for patina and thought the blade was "clean" when it really wasn't.

So I used some Rust-Oleum rust remover gel. It's pretty much just phosphoric acid. Left a really nice and even gray patina.

The patina on my M4 Para3 started the same way, ugly and splotchy and M4 also pits quickly. All from a single day, running a chainsaw clearing debris from Hurricane Michael. I worked my my yard and three neighbors’ yards, cutting vines as needed to prepare the area for chainsaw work. You don’t want things to behave unexpectedly because they’re suspended/controlled by the vines. Between the vine juice and being thoroughly saturated in sweat, the results were severe. I used flitz to try to knock it back, and at least ensure the rust was done/gone. After more time the patina has sort of a storm cloud appearance. Great small knife, I like how the back end of it fits my palm securely.

I never though to use a product like that. I’m content with the way it looks now, but at the time I was alarmed!

Or, let me add one on BD1N UKPK (for which I have got yellow scales from a salt model 2nd hand). As we were on a vacation in northern Italy back in June, I have decided to make a little test. I would clip the knife inside my swim-short. It would be then basically wet with sea water for the next ~5 hours and it would get flushed with a normal water later in the afternoon when I was taking a shower (yeah, that poor knife has seen some stuff it does not want to talk about).

I got no rust spots on the spring, no rust on the bevels and only very minor rusting on the lettering and jimping. I have heard that BD1N is fairly rust resistant, but this was a lot better than I have expected. If this was S30V, the thing would be covered in surface rust (my Schempp Bowie folder got numerous fine rust spots from after slicing an apple and only being wiped dry, but not washed).

Everyone has different tastes and outlooks. If I saw any corrosion at all on any of my knives I would not sleep at night. If it were to the point of not being able to fix it, I would likely toss the knife. Knives and guns need to be flawless to appeal to me

I'm sort of the opposite. I need them to get their first scar or blemish before I really enjoy using them.

Put this guy away dirty a few weeks ago and cleaned it off this morning. Mostly tape adhesive I think, but probably some dirt sweat + sawdust too. I was kinda bummed to find some spotting, just visible in the right light near the bug logo.

I guess I have to start worrying just a little bit more about putting my knives away clean.

Five years ago I bought this older Stretch w/Carbon Fiber scales, there was plenty of rust on the liners/innards... after giving it a spa treatment I liberally dabbed on EEZOX on the liners with a Q-tip before reassembly.

Image

This next pic was taken yesterday, I see no signs of rust just some grit & grime.

Image

I typically don't have issues with the ZDP-189 blade forming rust/corrosion, if/when I place it in storage due to rotation I wipe the blade with frog lube.

I also use EEZOX on my rear pistol sights/slides/magazine release as sweat from my hide can soak through my clothing and cause issues, it helps :usflag

Surprisingly I never had issues with ZDP rusting either, despite a lot of other members having the opposite experience.

It's a neat steel. Very nice sharpening response for the edge holding it offers.
