Best 5th pocket EDC

#1

Post by mazze »

Hi all!
Just wondering what you guys EDC in your jeans small pocket.
I alternate between my two Manbugs, Salt and K390, and a popular SAK, the Mini Champ Alox.
At the moment the Salt gets probably 80% of the time, probably because I have learned how to sharpen the blade and it is awesome! If this thing had a screwdriver/bottle opener it would be my holy grail :open-grin
For some reason, I use the K390 more at home, and it is a cutting micro beast when properly sharpen. The SAK is used when I know the screwdrivers will be used: to fine tune the sights of my air pistols, picnics or things like that.
What is your choice?!
Thanks

For me it's almost always a Dragonfly. Any time I really want a knife concealed more but still clipped, it's a Dfly on my 5th pocket.

If I would carry a fifth pocket EDC:
Chaparral FRN.
Small enough for that but a decent amount of edge and an extremely capable cutter.
Top three going by pocket-time (update October 25):
- EDC: Endela SE (K390). Endela SE (VG10), Manix 2 LW (REX45)
- Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1)

There's lot's of great choices. Manbug (especially the Wharny), Cricket, Dragonfly, Chaparral...

I have McBee too but never carry it. It's on the list to go at some point
Of all the things I've lost I miss my mind the most!

I think the chap is the smallest knife I'm willing to carry.

I don't 5th pocket often but when I do:

SE Ladybug Salt, SE Hawkbill Ladybug Salt, or Manbug Salt.

I do always have a SAK Rambler on my keys plus whatever bigger knife or two I'm carrying.

The Ti Squarehead has been my best 5th pocket knife but the FRN version has been just as great for me as well. The Squarehead is so thin that it basically disappears in my 5th pocket and it is still a perfectly knife for many of my cutting tasks. It’s also a really cool little design, almost like a trinket that many people are intrigued by and certainly not intimidated by.

I find myself fidgeting with it sometimes too, just opening and closing it subconsciously. In that regard I’ve compared the Squarehead to a worry stone in the past. It’s just something small that I can occupy my hand with. I suppose any small knife could work for this but theres something about the Squarehead design that has a really satisfying tactile feel to it.

The McBee is a close second for me. It’s such a cool design, fits perfectly in a 5th pocket and still very capable for its size.

Personally, I find the Dragonfly to be the largest knife that I will carry in the 5th pocket. I pretty much have to remove the clip though because I find it protrudes too much if I don’t clip it on the pocket. I don’t like having a knife clipped on my 5th pocket, so the clip comes off for me. Anything larger than a Dragonfly and I find it too large for 5th pocket carry. Even a Lil Native is too big for my “5th pocket preferences.”

I like Ladybugs and Manbugs as 5th pocket carry as well but I always have a Ladybug on a keychain and will usually just swap out for other Ladybugs or even Manbugs if I’m going to carry one of those two.

Dragonfly. Almost every day.

Clipless with a little dangling thingie that sticks out of the pocket.
That way it conceales better and I don’t have a clip in the path of my phone going in and out of the pocket below, scratching my screen.

I may switch things around a little when the weather gets warmer, but now during the winter months weight is less of a concern, so I’ve been carrying the KC pakkawood DF.

I have never carried a knife in a 5th pocket, not even once. I almost never wear pants that have a 5th pocket, always shorts, chinos, sweats, or some sort of lounge pants.

If I did, it would be a Dragonfly Salt or a Cricket.

Same here... though I don´t know how things would be if I´d actually carry TWO dedicated EDC folders, ONE being a dedicated 5th pocket knife.. perhaps I´d got smaller then with the latter, don´t know.
But I almost always carry just ONE EDC folder, ideally in Endura size when it comes to edge length (and have some kind of secondary blade on a Vic Rambler, LM Juice, Squirt, Micra or a full size multitool with me anyway most of the time)

/ If the Chap would actually fulfill a role as (secondary) fifth pocket knife: I´d really want that wharnie blade shape! and SE! - Just imagine this in the thin Chap blade... :smirk

Victorinox rambler during the last holiday. Dfly in the pocket.

Prefer no knife in the 5th pocket as it is more difficult to get in the regular pocket on that side.

My 5th pocket is a Ladybug. I alternate between various steels but the FFG K390 is a particularly good slicer. I also carry a Hawkbill Salt LB on each on my keychains.
