Question for Spyderco Opus owners

#1

Post by Soanso McMasters »

Can anyone who owns an Opus give me the measurement on the blade for the indicated area in this photo? Thanks in advance.

I don´t have an Opus, so I can´t help, sorry.

But I´d be interested why you need that measurement: Is it for legal reasons?
As one who lives in a country with zero restricting knife laws, I´ve (still) always wondered how LEOs measure blade length:

- Just like in your pic
- Or where the blade meats the handle first (so the SHORTEST possible distance, so it would effectively have a shorter "legal length" than the way it is measured in your pic)
Top three going by pocket-time (update October 25):
- EDC: Endela SE (K390). Endela SE (VG10), Manix 2 LW (REX45)
- Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1)

Yes my state has a 4 inch length for folding pocket knives. My experience with Spyderco is they measure from the middle part of the scales so I want to see if that additional amount picked up by measuring at the very longest point pushes it up to 4 inches or not.

Thanks for the reply!

... Knife laws are just crazy, really.

And totally useless anyway:

Said it before: Austria ( where I live, basically no restricting knife laws at all) and Germany (very strict knife laws) are neighbour countries and very, very similar concerning culture, historical back ground, political system and so on. We even share the same language...

...aaaaand, surprise, surprise: Despite the pretty extreme difference in knife laws there is NO difference when it comes to knife CRIMES and knife crime statistic (and I guess in over 90 % of knife crimes the weapon is a kitchen knife anyway...)

Off topic and perhaps a bit too political, don´t know. But it is just a true head scratcher to me...

/ Anyway: I hope you´ll be fine and can get and carry an Opus legally! Just judging from the pic I even think you should be fine, though it could be close.

Mine measures 4 1/16" where you indicate, 3 3/4" the way they are normally measured. If you have a strict 4" limit, you'll probably want to take a sixteenth inch off the tip. At least on mine you could take off a lot more than that without exposing the tip.

Thanks I appreciate it. How do you like yours? Centering, blade play, etc?

Mine is perfectly centered, no detectable play, liner lock engages to the exact thickness of the locking leaf. It's comfortable in hand in a couple of different grips (using the choil or not). Mine is also a factory second, although I couldn't tell you why.
