Knife cleaning tip

#1

Post by Evil D »

I got the chance to spend about an hour inside an Ulta Beauty the other day. As you might imagine, I was a little bit bored. Their lack of beard and head shaving products left me with little to amuse myself with and I can only stare at my phone for so long. Idle hands being what they are, I started messing with everything I could mess with and I discovered these little makeup applicator things, and realized how perfect they are for cleaning out knives.

For years I've been using Q-tips, but most of the time they're too thick to fit between the scales/liners and will only work if you pull off some of the cotton head. These makeup applicators have a much thinner "stick" and the head is a soft foam so they fit in every little crevice with ease.

Of course you can buy these things anywhere, I'm sure Wallymart and Amazon have them.

I need to get some of those. I also use Q-tips to clean out my knives. I often pinch off some of the cotton.

I will say, I do like using things that are more general use. It is one less thing to stock and it can be used for multiple purposes. That is the reason Q-tips and Mineral Oil are a vital part in my knife maintenance assortment.

Fantastic idea ! I definitely will try them out . I had access to a Q tip at work that was smaller than ones you can buy and I am glad to see a substitute. Thanks much ! MG2

Definitely true, and I'm also not super thrilled about them being just more plastic for the landfill. I wonder if there's a paper stick version?

Geeez David, never took you for such a pretty boy hahah! :tonque-out

Those really are a perfect shape for cleaning out knives. We have some cotton swabs at work that have a wooden handle and swab only at one end. They are also thinner than your typical Q-tip and work great as well. I asked our safety people that deliver these and fill up all of our first aid kits a couple years ago about where they get those from, but the guy didn't have a clue.

Biodegradable popsicle sticks, which you can carve to a point, also work. But, of course, you must subject yourself to popsicle-eating, which I am still surviving.

Q-tip guy as well for what they can get. For what they can't get (due to being to thick),
I just use a napkin/paper towel around a toothpick - works quite well.
The toothpick being handy for for cleaning knives all by itself already...

Next time I'm at the store, I'll check out those makeup putter-onner-things though

Just reading the words “popsicle sticks” reminds me of the feeling of popsicle sticks scraping my teeth. This happens to be one of the most horrible things I can think of. I can’t even put to words the discomfort it brings me.

Thank you for the suggestion! I will most likely be ordering some, as I hate having to smash down the qtips to make them fit. Plus, I hate the fuzz they leave behind.

Well turns out these aren't as easy to find as I expected. Neither Walmart or Kroger had them. There's a bunch of options on Amazon though.

My friend's a surgeon and he gave me a whole box of those little cleaner thingies. Except the ones I have are longer. Same at the business end though

He also gave me a few boxes (each) of the cotton swabs on a long stick. The one kind is the size of a regular cotton swab but the other type is narrow and pointy. Those work great for getting inside knives (and guns)

I've only been in Ulta a couple times with my lady. There's often some nice scenery in there. Last couple times my girl told me to stay in the car. I think I'm busted haha

Hahaha!! Dark sunglasses can't even save you, when you're inside!

I wonder if everyone else's lady is similar to mine... she says she scans any place we walk into, particularly when we have lunch somewhere (we always sit at the bar for faster service) She says she can usually find someone that she thinks I'd find attractive and then see if I spot her. If I do, no big deal...but if she catches me taking a second glance, I may catch an elbow to the kidney followed by "see something you like??" I've learned just to keep my head down :rofl

I will admit that cleaning ears with popsickle sticks is a horrible thing.

Instead of pinching the cotton off of a qtip, maybe you know somebody who could slice a bit of it off with a knife? :winking-tongue

Some dental floss can be helpful cleaning a folding knife with open back construction.

Ha! I often get the 'ol "I saw you lookin", even if I'm not! She just expects it. She tells me it's ok but what that actually means is it's NOT. What kills me is she does the same with men but somehow that's acceptable. Same with social media. She'll watch Tik Tok for a long time and often it's these "dreamy" guys lip syncin' and stuff. But then she'll freak out when she sees my IG feed and there's women in it. Her: "Those girls are young enough to be your daughter!". Me: "So!...all those guys on Tik Tok are young enough to be your son". Me again: "It's only going to get worse as we age" "my mind's stuck in my 20's while the rest of me keeps getting older" :cheap-sunglasses

Sorry! I'll derailing this thread now

I showed my wife and she thought they were probably available at chain drug stores in the cosmetic section, which makes me wonder why Walmart wouldn't have them in their cosmetics section.

I'm surprised too, I even bumped into the department lead and she couldn't find them either. They had a pack of some that seemed more reusable, more like a standard makeup brush but we couldn't find disposable ones. I'll check Walgreens and CVS next time I'm picking up prescriptions. In the meantime I ordered some from Amazon.
