At first glance I thought the tree frog was on a motorcycle. LOL He would have been in for the ride of his life!

This one actually looks more like a hornet, maybe a Baldfaced Hornet. Hoverflys usually have much larger eyes.
You are probably right , he was large for a fly and went after me went I took the shot . Thanks Mushroom
That does look like a bald face hornet. Those things are some of the meanest around. I have a picture on page 2 of one. That is the time they made a nest over my kids trampoline.

My bad really ! I have had a couple nests over the years but the nest you had and nests up here appear different . In Illinois the next is ball shaped and construction looks paper like. This guy was huge had to swat away after shot . Thank guys . Dan

They are typically ball shaped like a basket ball. My backyard buddies that I had to send to a dark hot place in **** had just started their nest.

They are literally the meanest things I have come across in nature. And I have been chased by a yellow jacket family.
Here is one of my backyard buddies.

Okay that makes sense now . Chuckie bikes all over town and always looks for the nests . He wants a nest to mount after they die off and shellac it .

I don’t blame him one bit! I would love to find a nice large and intact hornet nest to have for display. They can actually sell for a pretty penny too.

I usually end up finding them too late, after the weather has really beat then up, or I’m just too late in general and someone else collects it before I can.

You bet they bring good prices up here . Many years ago Deer hunting in Shawnee National Forest we found one hanging over a small pond . We gifted it to my best friends Dad and was on display in his gun shop until he retired . It was quite an adventure bringing back , garbage bag was fitted loose to avoid damage in Isuzu Trooper and they came out of hibernation. Totally amateur move on our part and has been brought up on occasions for a good laugh ! Dan

I’ve been at it since I was old enough to flip a rock on my own! Even as an adult I’m still fascinated by wildlife. I’m usually the one that’s lagging behind on hikes because I was distracted by something like a salamander or a mushroom! :rofl

This has been a really great thread, I second the thanks to Dan for starting it.

Blurry frame from security camera footage of one of the local bears. We only see this big bruin a couple of times a year. We usually see the younger ones.

We take nature so many times for granted , this moth is a an example of perfection. The camouflaged wings protect it from predators and so beautiful at the same time. Thank you Mr. Mak !
