Fixed blade in MagnaCut
Fixed blade in MagnaCut
Came across this video earlier this morning. There's a link to the knife in the description. Really dig the looks of this knife (a bunch of different handle scale options) price is a little steep but not outrageous. Just figured I'd post it in case anybody would be interested. Had I not spent so much the past couple weeks, I'd likely put in an order for one!

Re: Fixed blade in MagnaCut
Considering the madness around this forum over MagnaCut, I'm surprised this didn't draw any attention!! I know I have to stop thinking about it...I REALLY like that design.

Re: Fixed blade in MagnaCut
I actually ordered one. I typed a post to respond, but then it somehow got lost (I think my internet connection lagged out).
Another good magnacut option is Survive Knives (also in Idaho). They have way too many models, but they are now offering some in magnacut. Survive is also offering 3v knives with the Carothers (delta 3v) heat treat.
Magnacut, made in Idaho, small shop...what's not to love?

Re: Fixed blade in MagnaCut
Lol get out of here with that Survive Knives crap. Guy and Ellie are theives and running a Ponzi scheme. Please send your knife money anywhere but to them. Theirs all kinds of makers on BF listing new knives everyday, and quite a few have been popping up with Magnacut. I have a wharncliffe from David Mary already in Magnacut, and two customs that should be complete by March sometime.
And their not in Idaho anymore, they burned there shop down to collect the insurance on it, and are in Texas now. If you search survive knives on BladeForums, you’ll find everything.
And last, Guy is not offering Delta 3V anymore, he said it was too expensive for the special heat treat. They are strictly doing regular 3V and Magnacut now. Their is videos on YouTube about it from Guy himself.
Carothers is making the next batch of DEK1, 2 and 3 with Delta 3V and Magnacut, those will be worth checking out!
My apologies, but I cannot stand behind Survive Knives and I will vehemently turn everyone away from them that I can.

I don't know what to say. I'm totally unaware of any of that. I do own several of their knives (which I bought direct from them) and have been happy with them. YMMV.
Re: Fixed blade in MagnaCut
I like the design a lot. A great purpose driven knife.

Apparently CRKT sells a folding mass produced version (8cr13mov, made in China) with similar design ergonomics.

The ergonomics kind of remind me of the SpydieChef. It looks like it will do a good job on a cutting board.
I'll try to remember to update this thread when I get mine.

Re: Fixed blade in MagnaCut
I avoided it because I have a Mule and cannot justify another fixed blade in MC, yet.

That's another reason I haven't pulled the trigger. Knowing that I could have a Spyderco knife of similar size for half the price. I do like all the customization options readily available on the site for the Outlander though.

At some point this year I plan on finally ordering a Big Chris in MagnaCut. At least that's the plan lol.

i like that knife a lot. it reminds me of the chef with the blade angle/profile. i'm not sure i can justify that cost though, unfortunately, especially since i managed to snag a mc mule.

Re: Fixed blade in MagnaCut
Agree that it looks a bit like the Chef.
My first Magnacut knife will be a BRK I pre-ordered a few months back. Getting close to the top of the production schedule, should be here in a few weeks.

I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Re: Fixed blade in MagnaCut
My Magnacut Overland shipped yesterday. Hopefully I'll get it Monday or Tuesday.
I've been forcing myself to carry my Bradford Guardian 3 in Magnacut the past two weeks, so I can get a good comparison feel for Magnacut (I have the Guardian 3 in a ton of different steels). It's hard to not carry my Coop, but it's worth the education.

Re: Fixed blade in MagnaCut
I've been carrying the Overland for a bit more than a week now. I'm very impressed with it. The shape is quite different from my preferred fixed blades, but it's very versatile. I've used it for general EDC, but also for food prep and eating. It does a good job of keeping my hand clear of the cutting board, while still letting me use the full edge for slicing.
I'd prefer a more hand filling grip, so I may work up some new scales for it. With the standard scales, I'm finding hot spots from the tang (which extends beyond the scales) when I try out longer, harder tasks (carving at wood, for example).
The knife is also a bit large for my preferred (horizontal, 11 o'clock) carry, and the factory sheath is a definite fail for me. The manufacturer told me that it would fit a tek lock, which is true, but the 'hump' for the factory belt clip interferes with any reasonable placement of the tek lock, so you're left with the tek lock extending it's full length below the sheath, rather than sitting behind it. I've ordered another factory sheath (without the hump for the clip), but in the meantime I spent 5 minutes throwing together some straps for horizontal carry and attaching them to the sheath, which is giving me 'ok' carry. I may just break down and build my own kydex sheath for it, and try to address the carry issues that way. I wish more knife makers had better sheath options, but given the bewildering array of carry methods that different people prefer, it would probably be impossible to make everyone happy regardless.

Re: Fixed blade in MagnaCut
Most MagnaCut knives, fixed blades or folder, have been unavailable for EU customers.
Otherwise I'd gladly order one. But even if the maker accepts to ship international, the new french law forcing customs fees on any purchase outside of the EU is awful.
And they dont take a small fee, more like a quarter to half the price including taxes.

Well shucks, that's disappointing to hear about the sheath and scales/tang issue. Thanks for reporting some feedback on this knife Tom.
