Customizing a Delica 4

#1

Post by SteveJewels »

I've been carrying one Spyderco or another for 10 years but have not posted on this forum before.

I have a Delica 4 I'd like to dress up a bit for EDC. I've been carrying a Manix 2 in a Remora magazine pouch in my rear pocket but that has become uncomfortable so I want to change to front pocket carry with a clip.

I don't know where the original clips are so I have been looking around for a new one. I want black. There are steel and supposedly Titanium that are black but that will probably wear or scratch off. Carbon fiber looks like a good choice but then I got to thinking about carbon fiber scales. Does anyone make a clip and scales of the same type/pattern of carbon fiber?

While I am on the black theme, I found black scales screws and pivot screw but not black nuts. Are there any around?

Thanks!

I’d say don’t worry about the wear, carakote on a titanium clip is great stuff.

MXG or lynch northwest, both company’s make deep carry clips that would fit the Manix 2 or Delica 4 very well.

Both companies have nice websites on the internets.

I dont think I've seen a carbon fiber clip on a delica before. A quick search shows they do exist, but they look like one offs mostly on Etsy or Ebay You may be able to find a maker who would do everything, but it doesnt seem like something standard.

Like said already, there are good companies with black titanium clips. Lynch cerakotes their clips so its not a cheap paint job.

As for screws, Spyderco does make delicas with full black hardware so there should be a full set of hardware somewhere.

suingab at g10.lt makes some cool looking custom scales. Never worked with them but there are probably some people on the forum who have. Might be worth a look if you wont to go beyond CF weave which most scales seem to be.

You might be able to get lucky with a one off clip and guesstimating scales, but gauging the sheen of the finish can be tricky

Happy Hunting!

You could start with a Fradon Lock Delica 4 in HAP40 and add a CF clip if available.
I haven't seen any aftermarket CF Delica scales, but I haven't been looking.

I bought a set of OD linen micarta scales from Knife Custom Garage for my Endura wharnie, and I know he also does Delica scales.

Best quality scales I've purchased. Fit and finish is amazing. Takes a good month to get to the states from Russia, but highly recommended.

I believe his books are closed right now because he is having some issues getting parts for his CNC... But Boomer52 over on BladeForums makes carbon fiber scales, backspacers, and pocket clips for the Delica.

Here's a set of his carbon fiber, Lil' Para scales and backspacer on a Super Gold Delica.

I know for sure that www.cuscadi.de makes cf scales for the Delica. You could email them.

They also have a material they call "T-1000". Looks a lot like carbon, though it's some kind of aluminium(-laminate?).
Below an example from their website (screenshot) in red, perhaps they make it in black too, don't know.

Welcome aboard!

I can easily second the recommendation for Knife Custom Garage. Their products are very well finished, but because of all the shipping difficulties around the world you have to be patient for delivery.

All the other advice is solid as well.

You can find carbon fiber clips on ebay and etsy, but they are not deep carry style (if that matters to you). Example image below:

Steels: Elmax, S30V, XHP, 4V, VG-10, CPM CRU-WEAR, K390, Z-WEAR, S45VN, 204P, REX 45

I like my Lynch NW titanium clips very much. Highly recommended.
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

I second Wartstein's choice. cuscadi.de is always doing an excellent job, no matter the knife or scale material !
:respect In the collection :respect : Lots of different steels, in lots of different (and same) Spydercos.

Thanks for all the responses. I went with an eBay carbon fiber regular carry and black clip screws for now. I'll use that for a while until something else strikes me.

The red scales do look good though.

The carbon fiber pocket clip arrived yesterday. It positions in my pocket very well.

It positions so well I may have to look for another Spyderco.
