The recent thread about which knives we want for 2023 finally got me to really think about a design I’ve been mulling over for a while, and wondered why Spyderco has never released it.

It would be a Ti framelock design similar to the Mantra 1, Chef, or Swayback but with a blade shape more like the GB2 or Advocate (hollow grind preferred). I guess what I’m wanting is a knife that is similar in looks to a sebenza or small sebenza but with a spydie hole. I know Spyderco already kind of did a knife like this with the Slysz Bowie, but I think if they had it without the crowned spine or rounded scales the cost could be brought down in the range of the Spydiechef or Mantra 1 (in the $200-$250 range). I’d also prefer a steel lockbar insert to prevent lock stick. And a wire clip.

I think a knife like this would be really popular and am surprised they haven’t really done one like it before (that I can recall). Maybe they don’t want to make something so similar to a sebenza? I’d be very interested if they did as I greatly prefer the spydie hole, and the only way to get one on a sebenza is via aftermarket grinding.

Anyway, thoughts?

So an Advocate without a flipper tab? Presumably on washers? Bead blasted?

I never really liked the orange peel look of the Advocate scales, I’d much prefer the scales to be bead blasted and stonewashed similar to the Chef or Swayback. And with the issues that can arise with bearings I’d prefer washers. And yeah no flipper tab.

Let's put a ceramic detent in it and I would buy at least 2.

I'd love one. I'm sure Sal and Eric have a design somewhere in waiting that could bumped up and converted to Ti. US Made would also be great.

I would love a straight spine, RIL, clip point a little more than a drop point, but it would be nice to see either one.

I would definitely be down for a clip point with a straight spine.

It might be all the more possible if we push the price to $250-300 US. I’ll reiterate that US made would best, for me at least.

I think the only way the Spyderbenza could happen was if there was a partnership with CRK.

Otherwise that's too close to someone else's signature style and it won't fly.

Maybe a Techno 3 could be close.

I think there’s plenty of room to make this without stepping on anyones established style.

We just need a Slysz Bowie 2.

Or a K2 2, but that is not going to happen.

Sage 2 in MC (or K390) is all I want in this department. Maybe with slightly contoured scales like on the Swayback. I have a few CRK knives, why copy their design?

A larger full Ti Brouwer would get close. I’d be in for one.

Unfortunately, I think it would be more realistic to make it in Taiwan, and with an MSRP closer to $400.

I would be “in” on a larger Brouwer, full Ti or not. Just as long as the blade length is under 3.5”.

I bet any RIL Spyderco is going to have a Taiwanese origin. I may be one of the few but I love the classic Spyderco drop point blade shape of the GB1 and the Stretch. So a RIL GB1 or GB2 run in PSF 27 would be awesome. ~$300 MAP...

While I agree that this is most likely, I have to wonder how Chris Reeve Knives can make their product in the US and have it hit the same (or close) price point? At least for the small plain models. I would expect the US Spyderco plant could make this happen in the $300-350 range. Certainly less hand fitting on Spyderco knives.

You need to put much more work into that if you want good inputs. Take a pencil and start to draw something.

Even a quick illustration is far better than a thousand words.

The large Plane Jane’s are more like $450. The smalls are $375. I remember when the larges were more like $275.

I think he issue with Spyderco making more knives in Golden is less about price point, and more about Capacity. It seems like the Taiwan knives cost just as much these days - sometimes more than the Golden knives.
