the coating isn't only for corrosion resistance. sometimes you don't want a shiny blade. i think they were mostly made for light discipline in combat applications. personally, i think it would be cool to have a yellow handle for increased visibility with a black blade so i don't have a fishing lure clipped to my shorts. it's not necessary though and i don't want it enough to buy two pac salts to make it.

Yes , I totally get the need for a black blade for military/ tactical applications and the knife all blacked out looks really great . I would just prefer an unfinished blade . I think this knife would really work for me for heavier jobs outdoors . It would free me up to go SE in right pocket , which is something I have been wanting to do . MG2

Pacific Salt 1 in SPYDEREDGE is probably among my top fav spydies ever. Pac Salt 2 is not my cup of tea just because of the Endura 4 style handle. I love the Endura3 style handle as much as I dislike the Endura4 style. I even like the volcano grip more. I also like the hollow grind more than the flat grind. I am a fan of H1 alloy and I preached like Moses in the desert about the fact that it keeps a more than decent edge even in plain configuration. The problem is that people need to understand how to sharpen and maintain H1 in plain edge.

vivi, maybe i missed it, but i know you've also really been liking the native chief. have you compared the two anywhere? if there was a native chief in a rustproof steel, would you prefer it to the pacific salt?

i prefer the newer texturing in my hands, but the volcano grip is much nicer in the waistband of my board shorts.

I felt that way for years so I can sympathize. I still think the volcano texture is better for IWB carry, but for me the grippier texture works better while using the knife, the more rounded butt is more ergonomic etc.

I've always liked that pointy tip polished edge Pacific of yours, it's beautiful.

More than likely. The Pacific in saber grind would still have the edge when it comes to how bomb proof the blade is, and I'd imagine it would be a little cheaper, but other than that I'd imagine a hypothetical LC200N Chief Salt, or a Salt Police, would be my new EDC should one materialize.

The Chief carries about just as well while offering more edge, it offers a wider array of grip options, and the lack of a thumb ramp really enhances ergonomics for me.

ah... yes. i forgot how you don't care for the thumb ramp. i've yet to try a chief, but i have a native, so i can imagine what it would be like extending in both directions. i'm not a huge fan of the thickness of the native, but i'm sure the chief thins out nicely toward the tip and has a good amount of thinner blade than the native. i definitely prefer the handle shape over the endura/pacific, but i think i would still prefer the blade of the pacific. thanks for sharing your thoughts.

An Endela sized Salt, with the shallow serrations, would also be a great companion to the Pac Salt and Salt.
I have to consciously decide to rotate out my Pac Salt though. When I carry it, it always occurs to me that it would be the only knife I need.

I have that same problem. I have days I wonder why I own anything else. Got a drawer full of amazing folders that I pass over in favor of my drawer of Pacific Salts.

If I were to start my hobby over, I think I would get at least four in different configurations, before I even looked at anything else.

I got the bug from Lance. He moded the first one for me and I moded the next five ones, all being serrated Pac Salts 1 of course. O own six now(3 with black handle and 3 with yellow handle) so I might say I'm covered for the rest of my life so to speak :releived

Being very weight cautious, I prefer the FFG Pac Salt over the H-1 saber hollow.
I've convinced myself that I liked the handle shape of the Pac Salt 1 better, but I've never owned both at the same time, so that might not hold up in a direct comparison.

I guess that didn't add anything of value to the discussion, but either way I'm glad you made this thread, vivi. Even though the H-1 Pac Salt is an unlikely acquisition for me atm, this reality check with regards to PE H-1 performance was very useful. Though I haven't been unhappy with it myself, my use of it has been limited and I guess that made it easier for me to trust popular belief over my personal experience. This new insight opens up quite a few doors that I, in my ignorance, had considered to be closed. The PE ARK immediately jumps to mind. I discovered this model very late in its life cycle, and considered it a lost opportunity when the SE was discontinued. Reading this thread, I'm staring to think the PE might actually be an even better fit to my intended use.

One thing that surprised me about the Pacific Salt 2 was how much stiffer the handles were compared to the original model. It didn't seem like it would make a big difference but it really does when cutting off plane or with light prying cuts.
...
So you feel the Pac Salt 2 handle (Endura 4 style, "milled out" at the inside) is actually STIFFER than the Pac Salt 1 handle (Endura 3 style, solid one piece handle)??

For me it´s exactly the other way round... though in shape and ergos i clearly prefer the Endura 4 style handle, i even thought of getting another Pac Salt 1 backup, just cause it feels more solid...
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)
