Prices going up: US G10 Spydies increasing more than other families

#1

Post by archangel »

Anyone has a good theory why? Sal said that FRN models have high initial costs for the molds. Yet prices of G10 Spydies Made in Golden are being raised more than others.

Being a sound member of the 'G10 is better than LW FRN' fraction, you can imagine what I think about this. :zipper

I like G10 much more as well. I unfortunately have no good theory other than the "global supply chain disruption" that is happening and "rampant inflation" that is also happening here in the US.

I just read that epoxy resin prices have gone up due to a plant fire in Asia and a shortage of workers, drivers, and material at manufacturers. Covid related issues are going to have a very long tail.

this year, more than any previous year that i've been paying attention, i can understand the price hike in january. i'm frustrated with it because i know it's scheduled and that doesn't sit right with me, regardless of how much i like spyderco as a company. i get it right now though. there's a lot going on in the world and a lot of production is jammed up. i do wish there was more stock available for me to snatch up before the prices rise, but the models i want are still worth what is being asked in my opinion. i think the days of seki knives being a good value are probably gone forever now.

Valid and true in general, but in my opinion this does not really explain why prices of one product subfamily are being raised more than others...

Did not know this. Now this is a valid argument. Thanks Jim.

I still need a Lil Native, Chief, Manix XL, Yojimbo, and YoJumbo. FRN is not an option. Yeah they are worth what is asked, unless it's a nasty exclusive with premium pricing. But they will rip bigger holes in my pocket, monetarily. And the money is an issue for me.

the models i'm most anxiously awaiting right now are the g10 manix, ikuchi, and s35vn resilience. i'm also really wanting a brouwer after just realizing they exist right as they're being discontinued. :/

Try to get your Spyderco knives this month, if they’re in stock, before price increases start in January 2022. Below street prices (MAP) are calculated at 30% off MSRP.

Street prices on U.S. models will increase by 10%+.

Street prices on Japanese models will increase by 5-7%+.

Street prices on Taichung models will increase by 15%!

Normally this bothers me but considering the price of everything is going up and many things are hard to even find it is currently the least of my worries.

Hi Michael,

Spyderco only raises prices when our costs go up. We don't like it any more than you do. We try to minimize increases.

Probably only Native5 MagnaCut for me next year -- famous last words! LOL!

I got all that I wanted this year before anticipated price increases:

  • Salt2 LC200N Wharncliffe SpyderEdge FRN (instead of Swick)
  • Chaparral Sun and Moon
  • Chaparral Birdseye Maple
  • Chaparral FRN (replace one I gifted)
  • Brouwer
  • SpyOpera
  • MagnaCut Mule Team

I think FRN has been the destiny of successful Seki-City models since I joined the forum ten years ago.

The logic was: once there is evidence that a new model will take off, an expensive mold can be considered. Once made, unit-costs of FRN will become be much lower than G10, hence lower MSRP.

I think the straight-to-FRN Rock Jumper (2020) and earlier Endela (2019) reminded us of G10’s new reality. That reality began before COVID and consequent supply-chain issues.

I sure hope Spyderco doesn’t abandon G10 in US production.

I don’t envy anyone trying to run a manufacturing business in the U.S. Labor is I assume a dominant cost and wages keep going up.

I don’t know what Spyderco’s margin targets are but it’s common to have 30-50% margin, and then retailers have a similar margin. So a small increase gets multiplied 3-4x by the time it gets to us
