The Hallstatt Folding Knife: Ancient Blade!

#1

Post by Bolster »

Spyderco is famous for its modern take on ethnic knives. How about a historical one? The Hallstatt Knife is thought to be the (or one of the) oldest known folding knives discovered so far (500-600 BC). Discovered in Austria. Seen as #7 below, original and a re-creation.

Can you imagine a Spyderco version of this?

A little work on a Sharpmaker will fix that right up. Probably need the Diamond or CBN rods though

Remarkable that this ancient blade was a hawkbill (according to one of the sources).

A Spydiehole would fit perfectly on that blade shape.

These traditional knives are still made, sold and used here in Austria.

A updated interpretation with a Spyderco twist would be definitely cool.

Right, I started a whole thread about this once: See here for more information on that traditional Austrian folder:

I whould also love to see a Spyderco "Feitl".
Feitl is the slang word for pocket knife in the whole Austrian and also Bavarian area.

The making of the "Trattenbacher Taschenfeitl"
is also intangible unesco world heritage site.

AArgh! Don't remind me. I forgot to visit the Opinel factory when I was in Savoie two summers ago...I mean, I was right there...

:pleading

A knife-making tour of Europe would be fantastic.

Do these have an opinel-style locking collar? Very cool either way.
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

If you ever decide to visit Trattenbach, be sure to shoot me a pm or mail if you like.

Shamefully I've never been there myself, despite it's just a 1.5 hour drive from Salzburg where I live and despite I had several of these Trattenbach Feitls when I was a boy (actually my first own knife, even before an SAK). :neutral

We could meet up, I could give you a ride and we could visit the valley together. Would be fun!

Since you are from Britain (right?) I just have to say once more: Should you visit, bring your largest, meanest, totally locking Spydie in screaming colors and with a very-high-ride-make-it-visible pocketclip and enjoy to carry it legally here in lucky Austria :cheap-sunglasses

Here a pic of the "successor" of that ancient Hallstatt folder (with my HAP 40 Endura)
As described in some links above made here in Austria since the fifteenhundreds to this day, still looking much like the BEFORE b.c. Hallstatt knife...
