I want a new knife, but something different

#1

Post by Jared »

So, I want to buy myself a new Spyderco. Sounds fun, right? There’s a catch though - almost all the usual suspects are off the table. I want something different. Something maybe even odd. I’ll start with the stuff I’ve got:

PM2, Manix2, Para 3, Para 3 LW, Native 5 LW, Delica 4 (several), Endura 4 (several), Military, Native Chief, Manix 2 LW, Manix 2 XL, Dragonfly 2, Chaparral, Salt 2, Pacific Salt 2, Shaman, Rockjumper, and an Endela.

Ok, I’ve got a Spyderco problem. I’ll admit it. But I’m celebrating here. I just got a new job, gonna start soon, and I want to commemorate.

My favorites of the ones I’ve listed are the PM2, the Manix 2, and the Endura. I don’t think I could pick an absolute favorite of the 3, but those are the ones I love. The next three would probably be the Shaman, the Military, and the Manix 2 XL.

I tend to prefer larger stuff to little bitty stuff. Still, like I said, I want something different. Something that’s maybe a specialty item. Something that’s maybe less of an EDC all star and more of the type of thing you show to your buddies and they go “wow, that’s different.”

So, for all of you that have maybe done something like this, hit me up with your suggestions. What’s a cool, usable, but maybe a bit “weird” Spyderco and why?

Definitely a Matriarch! Very unique and doesn't break the bank. I've got one, and it's awesome!

Subvert and Police 4 since you're into larger stuff. Native Chief is also another larger folder choice, and there are still XHP Chief exclusives available from Cutleryshoppe in orange G10.

if you want different, but highly useable and amazing, the se sheepsfoot caribbean is it. even if you just keep it in a bag for emergency use, it's a great knife to have at the ready.
keep your knife sharp and your focus sharper.

Didn't see any fixed blades on your list. I'd check out the upcoming Swick, and the Ronin 2 is a fun design that's deceptively handy in a utilitarian role.

As far as folders go, the Phoenix and Rock Lobster sprints are worth looking at.

I'd say Swayback! It's one of my current favorite Spydies. But if you want something more exotic, hunt down a Paysan, or get a Watu, or the recent Phoenix Sprint, or a Sliverax.

Everybody's eyes light up when I pull out the Yojumbo! That's the one you want. And it actually makes for a great edc.

For something a little different aesthetically from your current favorites - Matriarch, Phoenix, Yojumbo, maybe Watu,

Though it is hard to beat an original that is still available, albeit with more clip mounting holes - get an all stainless C07 Police SE.

Either Spyderco Province, Respect, or Sustain. Buy them all! Excellent knives and I am buying backups to them.

Schempp Bowie. Weird and interesting design, classy look, thin and slicey blade.

I've secretly wanted one for awhile now, but something else always pops up instead..

Don't forget the Amalgam. It's big, and if you put a googly eye in the Spydiehole, it will make your friends say, "Wow, that is different!"

I'll vote for the Swayback or the Watu. Both great designs, both unusual enough to be 'different,' both super functional.

The vallotton has always piqued my interest. Something different but looks good also. The myrtle has an unique look to the blade I just saw it on clearance at knifeworks. From the picture it didn’t look like it had a steel insert on the frame lock bar
