Getting an unpainted pocket clip

#1

Post by GautamGoel »

Hey guys,

I just ordered an Endura in ZDP-189 to make up for the one that was recently stolen from me (see my last post). While I'm excited about my new Endura, I don't much care for the painted pocket clip. If I email Spyderco, will they send me a plain, unpainted pocket clip? Any thoughts on how to get unpainted pocket clips?

I don't know if Spyderco offers non-painted clips for all of their models. It would be cool to know.

Strip and polish?

To my knowledge Spyderco won't "send" you a pocket clip. You may be able to purchase one from them.

Soaking the clip in acetone will remove the paint and leave this behind.

Lacquer thinner also works for this. The matte stainless is nice, doesn’t draw unwanted attention. The clip can be polished with a Dremel using cotton felt buffing wheels/points charged with chromium oxide compound if polished is desired. You can also just purchase a shiny PM2 clip which will fit on a Delica/Endura, and save yourself the work.

Did you make those scales?

Judging from patina, I’m guessing that’s a K390 Police.

I bought one late last year, they're kind of expensive. Almost $100 IIRC, and for some reason they send you a free knife when you buy the pocket clip?

I purchased, via phone call, a handful of the polished/shiny clips a couple of years ago. Few bucks each, plus shipping.

I use OOO steel wool on the clips. The finish looks like it has been stone washed.

OP asked a very precise question though and so far, none answered it. I'm sure he's aware paint can be stripped.

Yeah, I'd really prefer to avoid solutions that involve removing the paint. First, I just don't have the time to run to the hardware store and then play with chemicals, and second, I think the clip won't look as good as an actual satin clip.

Actually a number of people answered the question specifically and also a number of helpful people offered options. Sort of the way forums seem to work.

Actually it was, and you could have answered it as well as people told you the answer just days ago. They can easily be purchased from the factory outlet. Thanks for your continued pleasant tone and sunny disposition though.

If you buy more Endura/Delicas, you'll end up with some polished clips. I used to like the polished ones, but I tend to like the dark ones better since they blend in better with dark jeans.

Nope.

He got the usual broad answers that he should try to buy them from Spyderco and as far as I can see, it was one person among a bunch of them telling him to sand it off or mod it himself. Is that verified ? Was the guy speaking about models that featured painted clip stock (Endela...) or a knife that featured a non painted clip stock (pm2) ?

I'm not satisfied by the answers provided so far, so the question remains, will Spyderco provide a non-painted clip for models that feature a painted clip stock, like it's the case for the Endela or the Delica ? Can someone here speak for experience ? That was OP question and so far, I see no precise answer to that question.

More precisely to you araneae, I didn't wait for your advice to try to buy clips from Spyderco. I already did some time ago and I have the receipts. I never tried non-painted clips for models that feature painted clip as a stock solution though, I bought a painted clip and wire clips, hence why I'm interesting in the answer.
