A more portable Sharpmaker?

#1

Post by StuntZombie »

I've been trying to find a good portable field sharpener that works well for serrated knives, and it seems the best one out there is the Lanksy triangle stones. The problem with those is they aren't self contained, and tend to bang around on everything else in my bag. They're also a little shorter, which can make it a bit harder to sharpen some longer blades while holding on to them. Most of the other sharpeners I've found for serrations are all round stones, and tend to only work well on the serrations they fit, so they're not as versatile.

I seem to remember there being some talk about a more portable version of the Sharpmaker in the works some time ago, and was wondering if that was something that was still in the works, or was it abandoned?

sandpaper, bud. baton a stick in half and fold it over the sharp corner, or fold it over the spine of your saw / other knife / any straight piece of gear. touches up SE real quick.

Oh I know. I've used sandpaper on the corner of a table before, and it worked well in the moment. I guess I'm always just looking for something more official and a little less "improvised".

Well, I feel like a doofus. I've somehow completely forgotten about that one.

Hi Chris,

I use a GoldenStone. We also have a 30 degree stand for it in-the-works that I expect to approve of shortly.

Vivi, if I want to take some sharpening sandpaper on my next backpack trip, what grits do you suggest I carry? Of course I'd start the trip with a sharp knife, around 15 dps, so just for touch-ups. I assume wet-or-dry sandpaper is best?

What about buying a spare Sharpmaker rod and having a local tailor or seamstress (or gun holster or knife sheath maker) make an appropriately sized nylon pouch or suede slip cover for it?

^^ I was just going to suggest the same thing. Bring a spare rod with you, but I'm cheap and would say wrap it in a small towel/cloth :p

My diamond rods came in some useful tubes for transporting any of the rod.

Looks like I'll be adding one of those to the tool set then! Thanks for all the suggestions everyone!

That little double stone from Spyderco (some 13 cm long, give or take) with leather pouch works great for pocket knives. I put the leather pouch along a side of the thable-top, put the stone on top and sharpen. Works surprisingly well. Once I am done I strop the blade on the pouch.

EDIT: read the details of the OP too late, sorry. Yes, using the edges could work, but they are chamfered, so that could be an issue

Funny you mention that. I did notice that the corner of the CBN/Fine Double Stuff actually seems to be the right size and shape to work as well.

Hi Chris, I designed the Double Stuff 2 specifically with that feature for serrated edges.

Hey Chuck, I thought the Diafold had a tapered rod?

I thought so too Mr. G but that's the first pic I could grab and now that you mention it, that one doesn't seem to be tapered.

It seems like my first pic isn't a genuine diafold file. I think this one is the real one. Good catch Mr, Glesser. :)

Hi Chuck,

I noticed it because we've gotten quite a few serrated edges back that were really messed up by tapered rods. It's not likely that one can know exactly where to stop the stroke to the size of the serration and maintain the angle.
