It is funny that you should post this today. I was at the LA. Sheriffs' Association Convention yesterday and there was a vendor showing 'stap-proof' vests. He was letting people stab a sample vest with an ice-pick.

He invited me to try, and I said "I don't want to stab it with that, I want to stab it with THIS" and whipped out my PE Chinook. He said "This vest wasn't designed to stop THAT kinda knife!"

I had quite a good laugh at the uncomfortable look on his face as I eyed his vest with open Chinook in hand, then put it away and and checked out the rest of the exhibits.

I work inside a prison, and we're issued Second Chance stab-resistant vests. I decided to test mine out one day with my Cold Steel Mini-Tanto.

Well, let's just say that our vests aren't really very stab-resistant. Does the term, "like a hot knife through butter" ring any bells?

An ice pick has a fairly blunt tip, which explains why a vest could stop it but not a quality sharp knife.

By the time you read this, you'll have already read it.

Hopefully Jim, none of your inmates have Cold Steel tantos Maybe the vest will stop a prison shive made out of a spoon or some such though... I think I'd rather have it than be without it!

Unfortunately, with the hot weather, they're nearly impossible to wear during the summer time. In addition, the vests are only good for five years of wear, and all of ours have expired. Our employer is not replacing them.

I've seen some prison shanks recovered that are every bit as sharp and pointy as a Cold Steel Tanto. The inmates are very enterprising and skilled when it comes to making weapons.

Improvised weapons in prison have been elevated to an art form. And I've seen most of them used firsthand, unfortunately. A few times, they tried to use them on me, unsuccessfully. Some of my fellow officers have not been so lucky.

I visited the Texas Prison Museum in Huntsville, TX once; one of their really interesting displays is a collection of improvised weapons that were confiscated from prisoners. Some of them are amazing - right down to the functioning pistol made of purloined pieces of hardware.

I had that in the back of my mind when I had to go in among the general population at a unit in Beaumont to do an inspection on a metal finishing production line they had there.

You're doing a job that most of us are glad somebody ELSE is taking care of - stay safe, my friend.

I'll certainly try to, my friend. :-)
The prison has been a bit lively of late; lots of incidents occurring, very violent ones. I feel it won't be long before I post here about another stabbing.

Just look at me as your...correspondent in the field, lol.

The M16 was designed by Eugene Stoner, an employee at the time of the Armalite corporation.

Plot Summary for
Carbine Williams (1952)

This is the story of David Marshall 'Marsh' Williams, the real life inventor of the world famous M-1 Carbine automatic riffle used in WWII. It all started when Marsh, who was one to do things his way, was caught distilling moonshine, and was accused and convicted of shooting a federal officer in the process. This at first placed him in the chain gang which labeled him as a hard case. Later, to make room for those more deserving, he was moved to a prison farm, where he came under the direction of Captain H.T. Peoples. The Captain was a mild mannered warden, who did not shy from discipline when necessary, but also believed that given the opportunity, most men will respond to good. Believing that Marsh was just such a person, the Captain gave him every opportunity to reform, so much so, that he eventually allowed Marsh to work in the tool shop on his spare time to develop and build by hand, a working rifle, inside the prison farm itself.

I believe James Stewart played him in the movie.

I remembered seeing the movie, butt didn't remember which rifle it was. I kept looking for Winchester '73 which was an entirely different Jimmy Stewart movie.

A fully automatic shotgun was designed and built by an inmate in prison. A movie was made about that too, but I don't know any details about it. I'd like to see it.

I always thought a Kevlar vest could stop any knife. I guess I was naive (Evian backwards: do you buy your water? Just kidding). I actually thought of buying one someday to use while travelling. I was thinking of Second Chance because Uncle Ted (Tedly von Nugentburger) had the inventor on his show when he had a radio show back in '98.

His show was awsome; right up my alley. But most people couldn't handle his hardcore political philosophy like I could. I don't just mean his views were hardcore; his level of philosophizing was also hardcore. He doesn't have many light-hearted bones in his body. He was deep. Very intelligent man. He always carries a knife too. I (a Canadian) was already a hardcore U.S. constitutionalist before he had his show, so I really enjoyed him.

Plato, eh? We shall have to philosophize around a coffee in the SATC sometime.

2nd Chance makes the vests for the US military, in addition to many SWAT teams and police departments. Their quality is incredibly high. You pay for it, but it's worth it.
