Spyderco Q

After meeting the fine people from Spyderco at the Blade Show and falling in love with the carbon fiber Delica I have become a Spyderco junkie. I have bought about a dozen and have realized I may need to slow down and sell a couple. I bought two "Q's" both with the spyder blade. What is the story on these? One has a black blade, is it worth more or less? Thanks for your help.

A black blade Q?, well, that's one for sure I never heard off.
Now, how many e-mails of interested buyers did you get after you posted this thread? <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0><img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Hi TommyB and welcome to the den of addiction.

I'm not a huge Q fan, so I don't know as much about them as some others on this forum, but I've never heard of a black-blade Q.

You either have a real collectors item which you should store in your bank vault, OR...the previous owner went nuts with some flat black spray enamel.

We'll have to get Boxer(93 I think) on this one... he's the Q freak, I'm just general info.

Howdy TommyB! Welcome to <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>Land! <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

I've never heard of a black-Q. It sounds like someone sprayed it with black paint, but it could be a <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> that no one's ever heard of. Time will tell...<img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

By the time you read this, you'll have already read it.

Judging from the responses I may have geven bad information. I have not received the one with the "black" blade yet but that was the only reason I bought. I have rechecked the picture and it sure does look black. It should be here tomorrow and I will update my question.

A scanner can make a shiny metal surface look black if you don't crank up the gamma.

Might be a 2nd party piece. I've got a gold TiNi Copilot from JFJensen, and they had a couple black blade AlumNi's. Came w/a letter saying they did it in conjunction w/Spyderco(although the warrenty is void).

Waiting for the pics, I'm also interested to see the "black" Q. Meanwhile, welcome to the Forum and congratulations for your taste (concerning knives).

Hi tommyb,
Welcome to the forum. I've never seen or heard of a black bladed Q. If you have the pic or can take another one I'd be very curious what it looks like. Overall the Q's fluctuate in value. The Spyders usually for $60+ on e-bay while the more unique ones go much higher. I believe that lureman was offering $180US for Q's that he didn't have. Plus I've seen a few go for $200+ on e-bay. Also if you get the original box that can also hold a clue if it's truly a black blade.
I've heard that there has been over 50 designs made. I have a few, but I also have many pictures and some info on them. I just converted to my new ISP so I'm hoping to get a webpage up with this info.

Edited for additional info.

Welcome abaord, tommyb! The "Q" model was my first <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>co, and the one that got me hooked, as well! RKBA!

Well it's nice to show my ignorance on my first post to get it out of the way. My 2nd Q came in today and indeed does not have a black blade (as I assumed from your comments). I guess It no longer matters which one I get rid of. Thanks for your comments.

Tommy,

We're a pretty non-judgmental group. We've all screwed up a few times or more than we want to admit.

I've seen the same reflective quality on a few pix of blades (and I almost bought what looked like a green-handled Bob Terzoula, which was actually black!)

Anyway, a couple of Qs are a great start to a collection. If you sell, there are always a few Q-fiends who buy 'em up on ebay!

****, I've been called a few things here, including a guru regarding spydie history... and I even missed in the last month...

We have all made a few mistakes in guessing, just all part of the process.
