Hi JD,
ATS-55 was made exclusively for Spyderco by Hitachi. We were testing ATS-55 and VG-10 at the same time over a couple of years. In the end , we decided to go with VG-10.

First Impressions of SPY27 Steel
Re: First Impressions of SPY27 Steel
I've got a couple of ATS-55 Enduras and they worked great for me over the years.
I'd imagine it's cheaper and easier to source the VG-10 than an exclusive steel.

Hi Shumsui,
Not much of a price difference.

Re: First Impressions of SPY27 Steel
I have both ATS-55 and VG-10 models. Whether there’s much difference or not, I like VG-10 much better. It seems to get sharper (for me), and it seems to have noticeably better corrosion resistance. I’ll always have a liking for VG-10.
I’d really like to see more models in SPY-27 as their base blade steel.

Outpost 76 just tested this
Was hoping it did better with up front sharpness
Maybe it'll get better after a few edges

Re: First Impressions of SPY27 Steel
Unless abused, all Spyderco steels can easily support 15dps for general duty.
Oops, just realized I replied to a post from last summer. Probably answered already up thread.
Re: First Impressions of SPY27 Steel
Yeah GarageBoy I saw that vid too and was a little disappointed as well. But while I like the testing that Outpost 76 does, in the end it is one opinion. I think it's too new to say that's conclusive. I certainly will still enjoy mine and am looking forward to the mule in this steel when it comes out.
Re: First Impressions of SPY27 Steel
Well outpost76 seems to like it once he went ahead to sharpen it :D
Can I get away using aluminum oxide abrasives with this?
