Re: Caribbean at last
Wow, that really elevates the look (and I’m sure functionality) of the knife. I picked up a Caribbean leaf SE for work (in no small part due to David’s experiences) but am finding that I don’t love it as much as I might. I don’t want to sell it on especially, it just doesn’t sing to me - largely in part due to it repeatedly coming open in my pocket, the (bafflingly) stiff action even after stripping and rebuilding it twice, and (dare I say it) a slightly underwhelming cutting experience with the SE (don’t shoot, David! ). Your mods have inspired me to give it some TLC with my Foredom and make it the knife I hoped it might be.
Have a great day,
Al

Thanks zipperZipper wrote: ↑Sat Jan 14, 2023 9:51 pmI don’t own a Caribbean. I think I was put off by the yellow and black pattern. Never warmed to it (no disrespect to the designer).
In my view, a great mod is when it makes the original look like it was meant to be that way.
In my humble opinion, you nailed it. Well done SaltyCarribbeanDfly !

Re: Caribbean at last
Thanks Al, I dropped mine on more than one occasion and every time it came open…I made my mind up to sell because the last time it slipped from my hand it landed blade side down between my bare feet!!! The next morning it hit me to frag it and strengthen detent-both game changers. It is definitely one of my favorite knives. I’ve dropped it on purpose since to test detent and it stays closed. The finger guards bugged me too cause I like to get up near the edge sometimes and now it’s more comfortable and not so pointy. I had to mod back of handle to balance out aesthetics. This knife has no idea how close it came to being soldJoviAl wrote: ↑Sun Jan 15, 2023 9:25 pmWow, that really elevates the look (and I’m sure functionality) of the knife. I did increase the detent with a dremel, which helped multitudes. Then I polished the washers and blade pivot area.
Very nice!!!
Now it has a very satisfying flick, and is so close to Golden level of smooth with no blade play.

Caribbean treasure…and no pirates!!!ChrisinHove wrote: ↑Mon Feb 15, 2021 12:20 pmTwiddled a tapered burr in the detent hole, and now no more weak detent! I put in a little detent ball ramp whilst I was in there, as well.
The action on this has continued to smooth out and is just lovely. The Caribbean really is a treasure.

It’s reassuring to hear I’ve not just got a duff one then. I enjoy a good project so this is something to look forward to.SaltyCaribbeanDfly wrote: ↑Mon Jan 16, 2023 7:32 pmThanks Al, I dropped mine on more than one occasion and every time it came open…I made my mind up to sell because the last time it slipped from my hand it landed blade side down between my bare feet!!!
