Uneven bevel on my BladeOps PM2 wave

#1

Post by robin_the_redhood »

Normally I don't care about small QC issues, as my knife is going to be actually used. My BladeOps PM2 wave arrived 5 mins ago. the blade is impressive -- razor shape out of the box. The action is smooth. it looks much better than that in pictures.

but .........................I hate to say But, just found the grind of the bevel is strange, the first one I ever saw on a Spyderco. I may just keep it or return it. but curious how this one escape the QC. How do you think?

I have one with a much more subtle "upswept" grind line at the tip. Really didn't notice until I saw your picture. It looks like they were ground with multiple changes in the angle instead of a continuous curve. Mine is barely noticeable, but I would personally want to return the one you got.

That saber ground pm2 is definitely thicker behind the edge at the tip than it is further back. That’s just the nature of the grind. If you sharpen the entire edge at the same angle then your edge bevel is always going to be wider at the tip than it is further back. I guess you could progressively increase the edge angle as you got towards the tip in an attempt to keep it the same width but not only would that be overly complicated, it would be putting aesthetics over function.

I have a Valotton that is very thick at the tip. When I reprofiled the edge to 15 degrees per side the edge bevel ended up MUCH wider at the tip than the one in your photo. Cuts great and looks the way it’s supposed to look based on the primary grind. I’m happy.

That bevel is wonky in a couple different places. I'd probably send that one back. What does the other side look like?

Wow! I've never seen one like that from Spyderco. You should be able to send this one back, no questions asked just from this pic alone. They'll make right, don't sweat it!

I think we all live with wonky factory ground bevels to some extent and generally they’re fixed within a few sharpening sessions but what I see in your picture would annoy me no end.

If I lived in the US I’d send it back.

Yeah, that's more than a wee bit off normal for sure, mine looks perfect... as others have stated, sending that back is the right call for sure.

Thanks for all the input. I will check with the deal for a return. One interesting thing is, if you look at the tip closely, you can even see the marker line. Obviously someone went across the line too far.

on the other hand, I strongly recommend the BladeOps Wave version. Might come from the extra weight of the thicker tip, it's one of the smoothest action I ever see. It's a beast. Just make sure you get a good copy.

I have only had one noticeably uneven bevel on all of my spydercos. It was actually on a maxamet pm2. Mine isnt bad enough to bother me.

You could send it back. Or you could use it as an opportunity to learn how to completely reprofile an edge/bevel.

My 10V pm2 and my Rex45 para 3 LW have that same issue.

Granted, yours is a little worse but its the exact same issue at the exact same spot in the blade.

Definitely not anything ive ever noticed in the 50 or so Spydies ive bought new, prior to this.
