KOT : What's in YOUR survival pack?

With the "threat" level of a terrorist attack

raised to "orange", and if it were time for

that un-thinkable emergency, what Spydies &

other gear would you have on your person?

This is "at the moment" terror struck (yet!<img src="sad.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>) again?

Me : I have my SE Jester & Photon II on a

keyring ( dog tags are STILL there too!<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>)

I'd later try to lay hands on my trusty

SE Cricket ( it's in storage ) then some

MRE's ( yuck! ) from the National Guard, along with one of those newer gas masks.

( meebee some Nam' jungle boots in black, if

they were to be had.<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>)

What say the augurers?

AET <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Toilet paper. There are some things that just can't be solved with duct tape or bailing wire <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

A first aid kit, one bottle of sealed water, a snack, and a Kershaw 1005 Survival Knife. Top knife... The 1005 sheath contains numerous survival items, like compass, and wet/dry matches. I work at the TNANG, and I have access to many other items. My current EDC is a BM 735BT. When I someday get a Military, then I will rotate between the two. RKBA!

AET: I was EET(exercise eval team) in Korea. Just FYI,most of the masks sold out there are not serviceable. If you do buy one, make sure it's properly inspected. And don't bother at all unless you're going to keep it on your person. If you can't mask up in 9 seconds,it's too late.

Also, forget the Nam boots. The commercial grade ones are crap. Go w/the real mccoys:http://www.altama.com/militaryspecification.html . These are the only jungle boots I wear. Speedlaces rule!

Survival Pack? What is that?

I like the thing about toilet paper! But I don't really carry a survival pack-I don't really worry about that stuff. Haven't needed one in 52 years. Just my dull Endura! And a tank of gas in the truck in case I got to get out of dodge in a hurry, but than again that would be me and about 300,000 others too.

Interesting note about the toilet paper. Yet, in Changi (you know, the japanese island used as a prison during WWII) they (the prisoners, of course) used a bottle of water instead of toilet paper.
Now coming back to the survival pack, I'd put there my Ladybug and a Pulsar microlight attached to a ball chain around my neck, near the Mini Police. I'd pick my trusty old FRN Delicas (PE and SE) IWB. And a fixed blade (I have a Rambo II quite reliable clone) attached to my backpack. Just to backup the regular AK47 bayonette, which is no good, frankly speaking.
Firearms? AK-47, definitely. The older 7.62 mm model, not the NATO converted ones (5.54 mm). Maybe I'd try a Galil, I heard they are very good. But please no M-16, no offense fellows Americans, sorry. <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Dialex;
maybe you should consider a Czech or Hungarian AK-47. The Czech AK is a simpler design for easier maintainance. The Hungarian AK use polymers for the stock & grips, so you don't have to worry about the wood cracking or splntering from use/abuse.

BTW, the Galil is based on the AK design and it uses 5.56 NATO rounds. The same as the M-16!!<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Dialex: actually, they haven't made AK-47's for quite some time. Since at lest the late 70's,I believe. The 7.62 model you're referring to is the AKM. Also, the current caliber is 5.45,which is smaller than the NATO 5.56(BTW,the 7.62 Soviet round had a shorter case than NATO,39mm vs 51mm).

Couple of interesting points. The AK was not a copy of the WW2 German MP43,the first assault rifle(name was coined by Hitler,FYI),but a totally different design. The '47' stands for it's first year of production,1947. And Kalishnakov(sp?) himself is not happy that the weapon was 'westernized' by converting it to the lighter caliber.

History Channel had a 'Tails of the Gun' eposode about AK's awhile back.

Intresting thread about choice of firarms to grab in an ememgency, I can see how some would feel more comfortable with an assault type rifle. I do have a SKS cowboy carbine stashed at a location I could get to in a hurry.
But my major concern would be feeding my family 1st.
Where I live I'm lucky, I don't have a large city close to worry much about attack.
Since 9/11 though I've kept my Ranger 4x4 loaded with 6 man tent, sleeping bags, 10 gallons of potable drinking water, 20 various MREs 2 jerry cans full of gas. hand crank come along.
This stays on or in my truck no matter what, no exceptions.
+ every concivable tool needed to make camp for atleast 1 week. Ron

I carry a basic set of emergency gear on my person, including a knife, multi-tool, first aid kit, flashlight, firestarter, compass, and various other items. You can get some *really* small and lightweight gear these days. Take a look at <a href="http://www.october.com/preparedness/">my personal emergency kit</a> for a good starting point.

My car contains a day pack stuffed with emergency gear and supplies on a larger and more detailed scale, including a fairly extensive first aid kit. There is also a five-gallon container of water.

Most of my preparations are oriented toward short-term survival. I do not really expect to be stuck without outside resources for more than a week at the worst.

Since knives and guns are of special interest here...

For knives: My EDC includes a Camillus CUDA Maxx Bowie and the car kit has a Becker BK9 Combat Bowie in it. My wife carries one of the Spyderco Ocelot prototypes as her EDC and keeps a Spyderco Mouse in her purse.

For firearms: My wife, who is better than me with a longarm, uses a Ruger Mini-14 with 30-round magazines and a 4-12x40 scope. She has a Taurus Tracker in .357 Magnum for backup. I use a pair of Taurus Raging Bull revolvers in .44 Magnum: one 6-1/2" barrel with a 2-7x scope for long-range work and one cut down to half-length for better handling up close.

To Big Target and Dynarider: thanks for the infos (especially those regarding the caliber). Actually, I'd go for the Romanian made AK-47. Those are the best, really <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> Dynarider, it is true that current ones are AKM (acronym for Modernized Kalashnikov Automatic Gun), but I used AK-47 because most people seem to be familiar with this term instead of AKM. There are a few variations made, like a slightly bigger machine gun with bigger magazine, either square (40 rounds) or cylindrical (a la Tommy gun), with 72 rounds. But my favorite is the PSL (Semi-automatic sniper rifle). 7.62 magnum shells, long barrel, ergonomic butt, effective hit up to 1200m (4000 ft.), it's a beauty. You can even fit a bayonette to the muzzle. And it's great for hunting too, you can easily provide food for your family.
Too bad I can't post a few pics, this forum feature is temporary out of order <img src="sad.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>
