what others are you excited about from shot show?

i have to say, some other brands really have my attention this year and they’re brands i wouldn’t have expected to get excited about.

first up is the new composite dividend by kershaw. i’ve thought about the composite leek for years, but just never pulled the trigger. i was interested in the dividend, but that was right around the time i came back to spyderco and i’ve been distracted. anyway, this new dividend looks pretty sweet and i like d2.

next up is the biggest surprise. gerber really has some interesting new items. the most interesting for me is the two prybrid utility blade offerings. one fits a standard utility razor and the other an x-acto blade. i’m definitely getting one of each. i think these will be incredibly useful additions to my edc tool kit.

there are others too, but these are the ones i will have to get for sure. what others are you all excited about for 2020?

Those gerber tools are cool and i have never been interested in a gerber product before. The benchmade mini bugout got my attention this year

No pry tool but I make these when there's not enough filament left on a roll to make anything else. They actually work pretty well. :)

I may get a mini bugout too. We'll see. I already have a Sequel, Valet, & G10 Mini Grip that I don't carry enough. I might as well add a mini Bugout to the pile. Not sure about the white or orange handles though

The new Kershaw Lucha Butterfly knife has my interest, IF the price is around the $100 range.

Nothing in knives. Do want to add one of those Heritage revolving carbines to my .22 rifle collection and a Colt Python (I know it came out before SHOT Show) to my wheel gun collection. :D

i’m not typically a fan of gerber either, but these got my attention. i also like the armbar with the driver, as long as they didn’t completely cheap out on it.

the bugouts are cool, but i can’t make myself buy a benchmade.

I'm also not a huge Gerber fan, but that Prybrid looks like it may be a good one.

No, they're not my design to sell. The other side is the against the print bed, so no other markings. There is a version version with a solid back and finger grooves though. There's also longer and a mini versions. I prefer the one shown.

Definitely getting that gerber.
It would be perfect for work. Im a big fan of simple razor knives and that looks great. Also looks like it has a bottle opener so thats a big plus as well.
And it will be cheap so thats awesome.

Big question. Is the razor blade and exacto knife replaceable with a standard (dual notch) razor blade, and standard exacto knife? Did gerber say this? Or is it some specialized blade I have to buy from gerber?

everything i’ve seen suggests they are standard blades.

I am curious about changing blades on the Prybrid (a frequent occurrence with disposable blades). I don't want to have to get out a tool to change blades. For the past 20+ years i've used a Stanley with quick blade change. Couldn't tell from the photos if the Prybrid includes a quick change feature (tho would seem it must).

Hard to tell, seema like it would need as much rigidity as possible being a prybar and bottle opener... Looks like you need a torx bit to remove the blade

in the videos, they were able to just pull them out by pushing the carrier to the farthest position. i’m not sure how the interface works, or if it would be a problem in use. it may be that it’s fine for normal use, but not something you want to do hard cutting with all day. i’m looking forward to actually getting one in hand to try out.

Thanks, Ladybug. I haven't watched the vid. Thanks for the shortcut.

Honestly, nothing! Once they become readily available though, I want to try a Large Sebenza 31 Black Micarta Inlay.

i got the gerber prybrid utility about a week ago and have really enjoyed it. it’s got me breaking down boxes that don’t need it just for fun. i do agree with reviewers that say it would be nice to have a pocket clip, but i usually just keep it in my bag anyway. if i needed a utility knife often enough to have it on a pocket clip and replacing an edc knife, i’d probably carry a bigger utility knife like the milwaukee button lock folding utility knives. as it is, this is a really handy tool for cutting stuff you don’t want to put your edc through, handing to a coworker that needs to borrow a knife for who knows what, and for the other tools it offers as well.

Image

bonus hack: if you carry the leatherman bit kit and bit extender, you can put the end of the bit extender in the lanyard hole and use the prybrid as a handle for more torque. the prybrid is a more useful replacement for my leatherman croc that i was carrying with the bit kit and extender.

i finally snagged one of these new kershaw dividends. i’ve gotta say i’m really impressed with it. it’s a real beauty. and i guess i’ve forgotten knives could be so small and still offer so much blade.

here is is compared to my manix and yojimbo. it has a very similar edge shape to the manix, but it slightly longer in the cutting edge. it’s also has more cutting edge than the yojimbo, yet it is much smaller than either of these knives and disappears in my pocket.

Image

i’m not a huge fan of assisted knives or liner locks anymore, but i do appreciate the size to blade ratio, slim profile, and the fact that i still have a full four finger grip.
