Pricing question on scales
Pricing question on scales
Do you guys think that peel ply, carbon fiber G10 scales for a Manix 2 at $90 is a good, fair, unfair price? I've never bought just a set of scales before. Interested in what you all think.

Re: Pricing question on scales
I buy a lot of carbon fiber scales for the manix 2. I have paid around $75 for most carbon fiber factory scales. I was even able to find 2 sets of the marbled carbon fiber ones at that price. That included shipping and fees.

Re: Pricing question on scales
To me that seems a little pricey, but to be honest I've never bought scales aftermarket, secondary market, or otherwise, so I would have no objective idea. Still in all, a little rich for my blood.

Re: Pricing question on scales
I have found most of them on Blade forums and the many Facebook groups. I figure $75 isn’t bad since the usual up charge for carbon fiber scales over g10 is usually about $30-$40 bucks. Stock g10 scales usually sell for $30-50. That said I have purchased a set of the Flytanium Carbon fiber scales for the manix. They are a little thicker but still feel good. I actually prefer smooth scales.
Re: Pricing question on scales
Peel-ply CF is tricky. Impossible to find cheaper, Rick.
G10, and smooth CF should be available for less (for example from Flytanium).
Roland.

Re: Pricing question on scales
It is...but I'm kind of tempted to put them on the KW exclusive, with your favorite 52100 DLC. Carbon fiber with that DLC blade with the black hardware and liners. It's already a looker, but I think that would look incredible!JonLeBlanc wrote: ↑Wed Jul 17, 2019 7:40 pmTo me that seems a little pricey, but to be honest I've never bought scales aftermarket, secondary market, or otherwise, so I would have no objective idea. Re: Pricing question on scales
I’m not sure exactly what it’d run you but for not too much more you could pick up fully custom scales. I’ve got a couple sets from Suingab, g10it. He does great work and you can send him an image or logo and your scales are personalized perfectly to your tastes. My Delica for example has my tattoo of my boys names copied into the show side green micarta scale. If I recall correctly they were around $80, took 3 weeks or so. That was a couple years ago, not sure current prices but he’s still making.

Re: Pricing question on scales
Hah indeed it would! I think I've seen someone on here swap out a DLC M4 PM2 blade into PPCF scales, and the black-on-CF result was pretty sweet lol. Do share the result with us if you decide to go that route!TkoK83Spy wrote: ↑Thu Jul 18, 2019 8:41 amIt is...but I'm kind of tempted to put them on the KW exclusive, with your favorite 52100 DLC. Re: Pricing question on scales
I'm leaning towards it! Even the wife thinks it would look pretty cool...and she's the one that bought me that KW Exclusive. I held the Smock up to it to show her how the scales would look.
I believe if I did this, I would swap the grey scales from the KW Manix to the Cruwear model and keep the smooth G10 as back up scales. If I remember correctly, there was a previous Manix released with Cruwear and grey G10?? Anybody that has or had one, if you could post a photo of how it looked, it would be greatly appreciated! Curious how that grey with satin hardware and blade would look.

Re: Pricing question on scales
This the one you’re talking about? Looked different new, kinda grungy now after years of use. I’m sure I could clean it with a magic eraser but I like it this way.

Re: Pricing question on scales
That's the one! Though textured and a bit different gray, it gives me a general idea. Thanks for taking the time to post that.

Re: Pricing question on scales
Yes I remember when you got that one. I'm glad you enjoy it that much; even though I'm not big on black-coated blades, I still think the enhanced corrosion protection would make 52100 that much more perfect (in an entirely subjective sense lol)TkoK83Spy wrote: ↑Thu Jul 18, 2019 4:06 pmI'm leaning towards it! Re: Pricing question on scales
I keep that edge coated in mineral oil at all times, but DLC helps me feel more confident in carrying it during summer months. Very high heat and humidity here in central NY this week and I actually plan on carrying it tomorrow.

I think they look great all black
Re: Pricing question on scales
Thank you for the photo!! Now to debate, the sleeker/smoother/cheaper flytanium or go with the peel ply for almost double the price!?

Re: Pricing question on scales
Wow, they certainly do. I don't think DLC blades get enough love. I do like both Satin and stonewash finishes, but in the end I buy knives for utility. DLC has a practical purpose and I'd love to see more non-stainless DLC options.
Re: Pricing question on scales
I recently picked up a set of carbon fiber scales for my manix 2 by Flytanium. The quality and finishing was less than stellar.Fine scratches and hanging fibers unlike spyderco's which are always top notch
