The History of 3V, Cru-Wear, and Z-Tuff Steel

I wrote about how a steel patented in 1964 led to a whole host of steels including 3V, Cru-Wear, Z-Tuff, and many others. And the knifemakers that first used these steels in knives. Also the general properties of those steels like toughness, edge retention, and corrosion resistance.

Unfortunately I don't have any control over that.

Excellent article!
I have made knives from and enjoyed Z-Wear and CPM 4V, and have some 3V to play with. I'm glad to see articles written about my favorite class of steel.
Also, I learned about niobium carbide during my college final project, and have really liked the idea of primarily NbC steels since. I guess 3V MOD would be just about right for me.
Unfortunately, I have no influence in the steel industry and 3V MOD isn't available, so I have no way to get niobium-rich steels in the 3V/Z-wear class. Thus, the mention of the "new steel" in the niobium article got me excited!

3V mod looks very good, very tough, but I don't see any specs for it above 59 HRC. I would not be afraid of running it a little hotter to see what it delivered.

Cru-wear is one I like a lot. I have a Wilmont Knives K25 and it loves to cut and keep on cutting. I missed picking up a Spyderco Cru-Wear knife.
