SAL D2 QUESTION FROM YOUR THREAD BEFORE

Sal
Just wanted to ask you some things that you never answered from the thread before asking asking about D2
I have a few questions if you have the time:
1) why D2 when you have S30V and VG-10? What advantages does D2 offer over those other two steels?
2) will the D2 knives be/are the mules coated? If yes then with what coating?
3) if coating is used why not M2?
thanks

I'd say the major difference is stainless vs D2 being high carbon.
HC steel will take and keep an edge under more abuse and long term use than a stainless will.

The D2 offers better corrosion resistance compared to VG-10 but it's worse (from any POV) compared to S30V. Due to the nitrogen, which acts like carbon but doesn't "steal" chromium, the S30V has a good corrosion resistance and yet a great edge retention.

Dialex,
"The D2 offers better corrosion resistance compared to VG-10 ..."
are you sure?
VG-10 is as far as I know very corrosion resistant ( little worse then 440C), better then S30V, ATS-34, etc...
D-2 is at the border between stainless and carbon (non-stainless) steels.

yeah I was wondering sbout the D2 better than VG-10 corrosion thing too
well i have knives in both. i do not know about the corrosion factor but i do know that when i cut myself with D2 the blood does not wipe off easy at all. I didn't want to put it under the tap even though it should have been fine Must have mistaken it for my M2
anybody ever compared ease of wiping off blood on the different steels?

Hi Curious.
1) D2 offers no advantages over S30 V.
D2 has better edge retention than VG-10 but is not as good in corrosion resistance.
We would make it because some like it.
2) no coatings were used or will be used.
3)We've had very little request for M2. If the requests are there and there are enough of them, then we'll check out M2.

I love D2, just about any with it would be a winner in my book!
By the time you read this, you'll have already read it.

I would love to see a spydie in a high speed steel, maybe do a fixed blade with it.

Ooops, I wrote the other way. My mind was set on the S30V, I guess Sorry and thanks for pointing out.

- hmmm interesting. I did not know that D2 has better edge retention. Anybody know how it compares to VG-10 in other qualities? (sal feel free to post again )
Corrosion seems a minor concern with D2 as many knives seem ok with it...even uncoated. If it excels over VG-10 in other areas then it definitely it desired more in my book...
btw Sal, what would the RC be?
