Sharpening serrations from the other side

#1

Post by npad69 »

Hi guys just one question.
I've read that the proper way to sharpen spyder edges is to do a few swipes using the pointy edge of the sharpmaker stones on the serrated side then one or two light swipes on the other side to clean off the burr. What if I sharpen it the other way around: several swipes on the non-serrated side and a swipe or two on the serrated side? In the long run, this will form a bevel opposite the serrated side that would sort of even out both sides which I very much prefer because it annoys me how the knife doesn't cut as straight as a plain edge. Is this a good idea or will I be ruining the knife if I do so?

It would take a lot of time and waste a large amount of steel to even it out. The back side will have a much smaller bevel at first due to the way the blade is chisel ground.

A simpler solution would be to learn to tilt your wrist a bit when cutting thicker materials. It helps keep the cuts straighter.
