Spyderco Kiwi: What would you like to see if remade?

#1

Post by SpyderEdgeForever »

The Spyderco Kiwi seems to be a very good design, at least to me, and while I have not ever had one, there seem to be alot of Kiwi users.

Tell me this: If Spyderco were to remake the Kiwi, what features would you want to remain and what features would you want to change, aside from the basic blade shape?

For example: Would you want to see what I call a "Giant Kiwi", with a blade in the 3.5 to 4 inch range, and would you ever want to see a fixed blade version of the Kiwi?

How about a Kiwi Byrd that has the Kiwi features but made with the materials characteristic of the Spyderco Byrd line?

Would you want to see a Kiwi with Lc200N blade and FRN grip?

For anyone unfamiliar with the basic Kiwi design, here is the Kiwi 4:

Any.

The Fixed idea sounds interesting.

Would definitely be interested to see a sprint run of the Kiwi 4. I've always really liked the design.

I would change the scales to polished ivory G10, like what was on the Lil Nilakka. I wouldn't mind seeing VG10 still, but HAP40 would be a solid upgrade in my opinion!

Rounded handle like the original and polished G10 and I'd be happy. Of course I'd love to see bolsters and inlays but realistically I think it would have sold far better with those two changes alone.

The original lockback with the jigged bone was probably my favorite. Perfect mix of traditional & modern.

The original back lock Kiwi, was a small, nice pocket knife. It was too heavy for the size. If that had a steel upgrade and no bolsters that would be a great idea. It would be better than an Air. Polished G10 in something besides black, or silver twill CF, or something would be very nice. Even Nishijin would be nice. I would buy one in a heart beat.

I'd be all in for bolsters and polished g10. Vg10 is fine.

Wood or jigged bone with a nice patina friendly carbon steel would be ideal.

Original Kiwi-perfect little pocket knife. I'd love a redesign with upgraded steel and FFG.
Kiwi 2-is there such a thing?
Kiwi 3-nice slipjoint, great price, would pay more for a better steel and FFG
Kiwi 4-I think the Des Horn was a better big Kiwi.
Kiwi 5-Sal/Des collaboration?

I liked the kiwi but my issues are;
-for a blade that small (height wise) VG10 may not be long lived.
-in the pocket it’s odd, feels larger than it is.
- the cost is high for what it is.

I’d love to see one in a slightly better steel say S30v (just being realistic) nested liners and g10
Kinda like the chapparal.

It’s s great knife and I’d love to see more of them

I would love a line of kiwi's that hit lots of price points and a lot of handle materials. FRN, Steel, Titanium, Raffir Noble, G10, Micarta...etc...

The Kiwi lends itself to an upmarket pocket carry knife. So no G10. The handle has to be impressive when it comes out like many of the Kopas were. The red coral with bolsters and back lock was such a knife. Lets aim for impressive

I feel this is an underrated/underdiscussed issue, generally speaking. I prefer taller blades because of this. There are several models that I feel I must "baby" in sharpening because they come so short from the factory. Imagine taking 2mm off a buck 110 over a year or 2 of use and sharpening.... the blade would really begin to look like a needle. "babying" the blade means using honing rods when possible and removing the least amount of steel necessary to obtain a suitable degree of sharpness. Doing this obviously has its benefits but you'll never get optimal edge retention as your apex will perpetually consist of fatigued steel.

Both the byrd kiwi (slightly taller blade?) and fixed blade kiwi sound good to me.

I want to see a fixed blade version of this exact knife, just with a longer blade.

Make it out of one solid chunk of stainless steel, VG-10 or LC200N. A rounded handle is a MUST!
