I got this thread idea from another forum. Just really liked it.
When it counts most, what would you reach for to protect you and your loved ones in case of a break in ?
For me, it would be a shotgun, but since I don't currently own a shotgun, I would have to go with my Smith and Wesson Model 19-3 (1977 ) .38/.357 Magnum. This ole wheel gun is a real witch.

I like the shotgun but there are over penetration issues that prevent it from being used in my house in town.

This month it's been my old trusty Glock 17 loaded with +P 124gr. Speer Gold Dots. I bought a new HK P30 V1 in .40 S&W specifically for that role, just haven't put enough rounds through it yet.

Mossberg 12 gauge or GP100 .357
I like revolvers and I like that they are just point and shoot in case my wife needs to use it.

.38 is a fantastic round imo. Very accurate and easy to shoot.
Nothing wrong with a good .38+p either.
I've got a little .38 special derringer, but that trigger must be 20 pounds lol. I shoot mostly. 38's in my 19 anyway

I have +p and .357 ammo for use as needed but indoors in the dark the flash, concussion and noise in a smallish bedroom are bad enough to make non plus P a better choice for me. I use it in a 4 inch barrel though I do have a snubby available. Likewise the .223 but in all honesty if it came to me needing that I would be beyond caring about hearing damage and I'd be using it as a last resort.
The 4 inch S&W was what I used for my whole career in the dept. of corrections and it has the advantage of muscle memory just like the Endura I've carried since 92. The flash and sound isn't that bad indoors relatively speaking.

Agreed! I keep .38s in my GP100 in the house for just that reason. Plus, in a revolver as heavy as a GP100 recoil is very mild. Again, my wife may need to use it and I want it to be easy and effective. I settled on that years ago when I worked nights and she was home alone a lot.

Been a city boy for a while so I don't want to shoot my next door neighbor. So I voted for the Govenor loaded with 4/10 and 45acp. The 4/10 shells with disks is just plain nasty. :)
