Maxamet and the future

Gentlemen :)

I have been keen to get my hands on some Maxemet steel and finally found a Para 2 in Germany and also picked up a Manix 2 from France :spyder:

I have a feeling that this steel is no longer being produced by Spyderco - hard to find any knives out there?

Was the Gray Para 2 in Maxamet a sprint run?

What are your thoughts on this?

I plan to test the Manix 2 on game and and game ONLY - to see how many animals can be field dressed etc. It will be interesting to see how long the factory edge holds up for these tasks - think very long.

Cheers,

Congrats on the knives.

Maxamet has/had some production issues. This was mentioned by Sal some time ago, but no, the Para 2 was not a sprint and many hope to see it in the near future again.

Enjoy the testing of the steel.

Howzit china :D

Can anyone elaborate on these production issues? Link?

It must cost more to produce a batch of knives in Maxamet steel then in say S30V but the knives almost cost the same. ;)
Performance of the Maxamet knives - are insane even compared to Rex 45.

Sal has affirmed numerous times that Maxamet is still on the table, that they have not given up on it, and that they are working at solving whatever production problems it's causing.

FWIW I believe the N5 and Manix are still widely available in Maxamet. It seems like it's just the Military family that is causing the issues.

I can't wait for more Maxamet myself. :)

Love that stuff and have on last count 5 Maxamet knifes.

Now, I have the suspicion that the Rex 45 knives were released as a good substitute, as for all practical purposes, my Rex 45 and Maxamet PM2 behave the same.

My thoughts goes in the same direction with Rex 45 - However a cutting test by M.C. showed that Rex 45 cut 1122 inches of cardboard and a Maxamet 2121 inches  Then again almost double the carbids and 4-5 Rc higher steel.
Gor my knives today and the Manix 2 is great design 84 gr :D

There are some Nativ 5 out there on ebay - but the Para 2 and 3 are hard to get - will get a Para 3 in time. Got the 2 today and it does seem fine to me.

I am curious what you had to pay for that PM2 and where you found it. I am still waiting for new supply from Spyderco so we can get them at reasonable prices. The Manix and Native are easy to find but the PM2/3 are gone everywhere.

I am still holding out hope that Maxamet will return to the PM2 and Para 3, and hopefully we will see a Military.

Found the knife on eBay in germany and paid €269 for the blade.
The Manix 2 was also from Germany - NOT France and they cost €200.

Sal has made it clear that they are trying to get them back into production. Seems to be an issue with the PM2/Para3 stock width? I;ve seen no evidence that the N5 and Manix2 are no longer in production.

I love the gray, love the stone wash. The resulting rounded edges of the steel are a nice change from the "crisp" edges we are used on these knives.

I guess I didn't realize the consequences of taking its pic on a headstone last year

I'd like to see the N5 and M2 in standard as well as LW, if that's possible. But I'm certainly not complaining--I'm primarily a manix guy, and I feel like this is an area where the Manix is definitely getting treated well.

The two tests MC did were at different times so the cardboard used may have been different. You might draw general conclusions but exact ratios of performance based on those tests likely have large error bars. Also, the Rex 45 is pretty close to the same hardness as Maxamet, at least how Spyderco is running them.

Even though rex45 has helped bridge the gap between maxamet and all other production blades, maxamet is still in a class of its own.
With my examples, rex45 is for sure a little harder than everything except zdp and maxamet. It's close or equal to zdp, but noticeably behind maxamet.
I hope both maxamet and rex45 are around for a long time.
