Easy Opener

#1

Post by fredswartz »

Have been playing with my new Howard Viele PE and it dawned on me that it is by far the smoothest opening/closing knife that I have ever owned. How did Spyderco achieve this kind of smoothness compared to their other knives. The closest comparisons are my Civilian and the Centofantes which are still miles away from this knife. It has to be in the pivot material or hand fitting or both. The lockup is perfect also. Does anyone have any ideas why this knife is so smooth compared to other Spydercos? Apparently it is not just my opinion. Read some of the descriptions on ebay, Bladeforums and Knifeforums from people selling Vieles.

Hi Fred,

I agree that the Viele is one of the smoothest Spydies around. I'm not sure how they did it, but they sure did it right.
The Walker and Zowada models are also in there for smoothness.

Does it operates smoother than the Shabaria? From all the knives I have, the Shabaria and the Vesuvius have the smoothest action by far.

I'll take the Salsa for glide-ability. Even an extremely right-dominant person like me can open it lefty! <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

Never underestimate the impossible.

My Jot Singh Kalsa is the smoothest opener I have.It opens more smoothly than my Shabaria, perhaps because the blade balance is different and there's such a pronounced hump for the hole.

Smooth and "easy" can be confusing though.
