Sharpening the BM Rescue Hook?

#1

Post by vampyrewolf »

I'm buying a BM Rescue Hook from a well respected BFC member. I have no idea if it's new or used yet, didn't ask b/c I can touch it up if it's not the sharpest.

I've heard a polished edge works best on this one, and am wondering what is the easiest way to sharpen this one. Thinking the spydie whites from the 204(in hand), and compound on the 303MF case would work.

I think you'll find the 204's triangle stones too wide. I found the round "dog bone" ceramic sticks to be the perfect size to touch up the edge on the Rescue Hook. That said, I haven't found this "knife" to be of much use. Traded mine.

I've actually heard of using a shoelace loaded with stropping compound is very effective.

The tapered diamond rod from DMT should do the trick, get the fine grit (red)one although it will still be too coarse for
polishing but will restore an abused edge.
Use 1200 to 1800 wet/dry aluminum oxide
sandpaper wraped around it for polishing and break the diamond rod in first before using it without the finer grit sandpaper for restoring a moderately abused edge.
Match the bevel on the blade and stroke towards the edge only in one direction, then only strop the backside or just hit it enough with the rod to remove the WIRE EDGE, then strop. The finest grit offered in this rod is the red-fine.
This also works for all serrated blades.
