I guess it just depends how much you're going to use it and how sharp you want to keep the edge. If you're using it a lot and sharpening it a lot I would probably get steel like s90v or s110v. Those should be fine. I doubt handle material matters. What really matters is that you don't abuse it. I'd probably go with a Para3 or Native 5.

If I was in a budget (which I am) I would buy either the UKPK in BD1N or the Rhino. They both fit my use parameters now. Would depend on if I wanted to UKPK’s longer blade. It’s not much longer but it could make a difference depending on your needs.

I have an early 1970s Buck Ranger (112) that went more than ten years before needing a new blade. Depends on your needs which may well change in that ten year window.

Pacific Salt SE, Native 5 LW (S90V, S110V, Maxamet, or LC200N if you can wait), or Manix 2 LW. If you want G10 then maybe a Native 5 if you find a deal.

I posted above but wanted to add that I would buy two. Not two of the same but two for different tasks. Maybe one slip joint and one normal. One general knife and one super slicer. A worker and a gentleman's knife. A serrated and a plain edge. A heavy bruiser and a lightweight. I could go on and on but it really pays to have options. Even if that option is just to be lazier about sharpening. It is nice to know that even if you don't have time to sharpen, you've got one with a fresh edge. Knives last a lot longer if you trade them off. They get less damage if you use the right knife for the task. Tasks are easier with the right blade. If I only had two I'd have one with a course edge and one with a polished edge. Idk just something to think about. Obviously don't buy 2 at once.

Camping and EDC, for sub $100. Bow River and a delica, that has to be the ticket - since he wants a sub 3 inch blade. Or, PM3, but that is a small blade for camping uses
Bow River isn’t even out yet, we all assume it will be good but too soon to know for sure. But I kind of agree, he really needs two knives. And there aren’t a lot of good, cheap fixed blades out there outside the Spyderco brand.

i would recommend the manix 2 lw over all others for edc because it’s a really great knife and the ergos are perfect. unfortunately, the blade length is over 3” because of the finger choil. in that case, the native 5 lw is the natural second choice. personally, i’d wait for the salt coming out sometime between now and the end of time (i’m getting a little impatient), but the other steels offered are good too.

Any decent knife can and likely will last 10 years until you use power equipment to sharpen.

Para3 for sure. Mine goes everywhere and does everything! And it will last...

The problem is not the knife lasting 10 years, but the temptation to buy another.

I am with those who sat get 2 (or 3!) knives for that price :D

the possibility of loss, theft, breakage, misuse or destruction of the knife in 10 years is really high, having a backup or alternative would be ideal

I personally would get a Byrd Meadowlark in SE ($20), a Tenacious PE ($45) and a Bow River ($35) and for 100 dollars you've covered three sizes, blade styles, edge types, lock systems, carry systems, and have backups and complementary knives for very different tasks

all with Spyderco quality and style :spyder:

Honestly the byrd line is worth looking at, good point. Spyderco's 8cr13mov is some of the best in the business. The rescue 2 is a real working man's knife. And at $22 you could get a fine PE blade with the remainder.

You can get a PM2 on ebay right now for $109.18 with the 20% discount. That's only 3 cents a day over a 10 year period. For me it would a no-brainier.

Yep. Absolutely. The build quality is superior to the delica and many lw models.

I saw this thread a couple of days ago, and my thought ever since has been that any Spyderco that isn't abused should easily last you 10+ years.

So it is really about your price point (which as I remember was $100). The advice of getting a basic PM2 with S30V steel for just over $100 is solid. You will always be happy you spent a little more and got the first class item. But if you can't bring yourself to go that route for some reason, consider the Tenacious. A $50 knife and you absolutely get more than you pay for. I think I own two. I gave one to my son, who uses it at work to open boxes and such (he works back room retail) and it holds up well to lots of use. It is the knife I carry when I don't want to worry about what might happen to it.

Definitely.

I have a Mora that I've owned for 30 years now. It's been heavily used and is still in service.

Moras are excellent tools, and they have their market niche covered IMO (like Victorinox has the multi-function knife market, or Leatherman the Multitool one)

Me, I'd spend the $100 in a Pacific Salt and a Mora Companion and I think I'd have all bases covered for those 10 years in regards to knife cutting needs
