Endura V-Toku2/SUS310 laminated lines

#1

Post by Trackstar555 »

I just got my V-Toku/SUS310 from knifecenter and the laminated lines are are NOT uniformed. On one side there is a nice line with a generous amount from the edge. On the other side, the laminated line is barely above the cutting edge.

What is going on. I know this happened with the HAP40’s and other laminated lined. It seems like it’s hit or miss. Does it even matter? Why such the varation in the lines?

Is yours clad with SUS310? I don't have one, but I doubt that's the case on any of these V-Toku blades.

Lamination lines are unlikely to be perfect because of the steels likely getting smashed together when hot to weld them together. Soft materials tend to move in unexpected ways when smooshed, but overall, the HAP40 and V-Toku will occupy enough of the very center to not affect the edge bevel.

The lamination process has it's challenges I'm sure, as does full flat grinding of blades. It is purely cosmetic and will not effect cutting performance as the core steel will always be the edge steel. However, we pretty much all hope for a nice even example.

My Endura V-Toku2 says SUS410. The lamination lines are not symmetrical but fairly close, one side is about 3/16 from the edge, the other about 1/8. This is my first Endura. Great knife, fits my hand just right.

I agree with the sentiments that Attila and abbazaba express regarding the difficulties in perfecting the cladding of these steels together perfectly. The level of craftsmanship involved to perfect such a feat in a run of 1200~ pieces per knife in this sprint run steel would be very time consuming and the extra cost for that premium wouldn't go over well amongst the ELUs looking to get a taste for this steel. We have to remember Spyderco does these sprints as a very generous act for us all and sometimes I think we have expectations that are a bit out of line on our end of showing appreciation for what they do for us.

That being said, the only issue that was brought to my attention would be if you sharpen with a fixed angle, I.E. with a sharpening system. The exact thickness of clad steel per side might not be EXACTLY perfect and might cause a touch of an offset of core V-Toku once you do reach that lamination line, but I doubt most people will use this knife to the point where that would even be an issue. Could be a good time to learn to freehand for those whom this may concern as well if this does cause an issue as this steel is known for its' excellent sharpenability and responsiveness ;).

My Endura lamination is not only wildly asymmetrical but on one side the lamination line runs into the edge about 3/16 " before the tip. This is unacceptable. I have sent it to Spyderco for replacement or credit.

I have three Endura knives with V-TOKU2,,, all have very consistent and left/right side matching lamination lines.
They are much better than my Super Blue and HAP-40 blades.

I wonder if you asked knife center in the comment of your order if they would check the blade for you

He would also tell you that you are buying things you don’t need with money you don’t have to impress people you don’t know.

Not saying that is what you are doing, I just like that quote from the movie. :)

Ditto me on this. I also have a HAP40 and ZDP Enduras and they are not totally symmetrical.

Touché. This was a Fathers Day Gift, so it was perhaps exempt, but yes I have violated Project Mayhem with the vices from this forum before!

C'mon guys a little asymmetry is not bad if it doesn't affect function, in fact it makes the knife more unique and gives it character! Boring straight lines and consistency is what one would expect from run of the mill production pieces

My Lum Tanto had the same problem. I just kept it though. It looks ugly and like sloppy craftsmanship, but like someone mentioned earlier, the blade should function the same.

I was OK until I looked at it closely while sharpening and my personal CQI kicked in . On a scale of 10 it's 3, but I kept thinking of the other Spyderco knives I could have had - Chaparral, Native 5 lightweight, or Manix without notable flaws.

No worries.

I had a Nirvana that had a light detent and when you gave it a shake, the blade would fall out and swing all the way around and lock up.

Now that's actually pretty cool in some respects, but I didn't trust the local cops to always be on the same page, and so I sent it back.

Some people pay extra for those lines to be uneven. http://www.bladegallery.com/shopexd.asp ... o=1&size=n
