Well done! That's the dye job I've been contemplating, when I get my LW yellow Magnacut Manix (any day now). I like yellow, but prefer it to not be sending its beacon of ultra-visible yellowness from my pocket top.

Re: Post up your Rit dye projects..
Looks great. I think a fade, with a denim blue like color where it sticks out of the pocket, to a bright color near the blade, would work very well.

Most recently I hit the K390 blue Stretch with a synthetic liquid "Sapphire Blue" fade
about to get my first Spyderco and not the biggest fan of the K390 blue FRN that is the only one available for now
the darkest part is almost exactly the shade my Deep Impact Blue S550 Mustang is, but the fade shade is probably what I like the most, so I might do that to the K390 Delica 4 Wharncliffe that I want to get as my cardboard cutter
maybe I'll try the darkest shade on the DragonFly 2 K390 I plan to get as my pocket carry, I will probably get some Micarta scales down the road anyway as they make it look a lot classier, but this will do until that
btw did you do it the proper way and disassemble it or did you just dip the K390 and nothing terrible has happened?
Re: Post up your Rit dye projects..
Love the knife, hated the colour.
Dark green over the yellow. Turned out a bit lighter than expected but I like it.

hey guys, so impressed with all the works posted here! I was thinking to rit dye my Native 5 salt with green colour , something like R100 did above.
My question is how durable are rit dye projects? Does anybody have a photo after let's say half year of a daily use of a rit dyed frn scales?

I hated the looks of the Zome Blue/Gray so I soaked it in some denim blue Rit dye. I love the deep blue color much more than the zome. Did an acid etch on the Superblue/SUS410 blade. I like it now!
Re: Post up your Rit dye projects..
4 or 5 months of daily carry/use: The Rit dye is surface level--how deep it goes depends on time, temperature, and concentration in the dye. For the deepest layer/most durable color, get the exact shade of dye you want (not any darker) and simmer the scales in it for hours. I did that with an Assist Salt to take it from yellow to midnight with the same indigo dye used on this Native (except I left the knife assembled because, you know, it's a Salt). That color layer is pretty deep and durable. It lives in my rescue bag and doesn't get a lot of use, but i have never had any yellow peek through, and I often forget that it started out that way. This Native was given a quick job to get that fade and not get it too dark, so it's on the least durable end of the spectrum. The tops and edges are what will show wear, and depending on what you're going for, you may prefer that look and design accordingly.kuxxxan wrote: ↑Tue Aug 22, 2023 1:13 amhey guys, so impressed with all the works posted here! Here's the Assist Salt. You can see where I softened up the hook on the pommel end of the handle. I actually did this after the first dye and exposed some yellow, so I re-dyed it. I do remember that dye layer being pretty deep (maybe 10 thousandths, but that was a long time ago so my memory is foggy).

Re: Post up your Rit dye projects..
I used Rit Dye, Racing Red, my first Rit Dye mods. I also used the Rit Dye Fixative bath to lock in the colour. However the solution became slightly reddish and I lost the fade to yellow on the handles on my Salts. I also did a grey G10 Jester that didn't turn out as red as I wanted.
Re: Post up your Rit dye projects..
Can't remember if I posted these on this thread or not.
Salt 2
Sanded down the edges of my Crucarta PM2 and just went with a straight blue this time instead of the fade.

Re: Post up your Rit dye projects..
so the micarta scales dyed easily for you? I'm thinking of going with some of my kelly green whenever the crucarta manix xl / millie 2 come out.
Re: Post up your Rit dye projects..
I think this Micarta dyed easier than G10 actually.
How it started after a good cleaning.
Started off with a fade. Used Vaseline to prevent staining toward the middle. Worked ok, but I should have used a more temperature resistant grease. I was trying to go for a spotty uneven fade. Inspired by some of RC Blade works Micarta blends.
Sanded the edges recently. I find the Crucarta models have less chamfering than the G10 models. Improved the ergos a good bit. If I had to do it again, I would be more aggressive with the sanding.
Then redyed with aquamarine color.
I don't always choose the PM2 for dirty work. But have used it for projects around the house and have taking it camping and used it for all sorts of dirty jobs. Dye has held up well.
