Did you put the spring back in upside down? It is easy to do. Also make sure it is seated all the way into the backspacer. Also easy to goof up.

The lock bar screw might have been too tight before you took it apart, making it seen like the spring was stronger.
Also, grit and crud might have increased lock bar resistance before it was cleaned.

I agree with both responses so far. The tightness of the screw for the lockbar definitely makes a difference. Also the precise position of the lock spring can make a big difference, I’ve got aftermarket scales and the spring sits slightly different and it is a noticeably different feel. Not bad but different.

look inside the scales, part of the backspacer might not be back in its hole in the liner...I am having the same issue and am not sure how to overcome to power of the lock to put and keep the backspacer in place

It's a good chance that the little peg on the backspacer isn't located in the corresponding hole on the metal liners. If you're lucky, the peg won't be ruined, which means you can take it apart and put it back together correctly. The method I use is to assemble the handle halves, with the spring and blade in place. Then I'll install the lockbar from the top. I find it easiest to fit the locking notch into the blade, and just push the lockbar down until it's in place. Then just install the lockbar screw. It's a little tough to overcome the spring pressure and get everything lined up right, but it's the most reliable way of making sure everything else is in place.

Good luck, I hope you get it figured out.

Are you saying the backspacer wasn't aligned?
How is it possible to even get all the screws in and knife together in this condition.

the backspacer was aligned except for a small peg in on it that was pushed downward in the knife instead of fitting into the liner...putting the locking mechanism together with the blade in place creates enough pressure on the backlock to shift part of it unless you have the peg in place between both scales like was recommended here

I just took mine apart and tried to put it together that way, couldn't do it, or I'm not understanding. Were there any gaps in the scales after assembly in this condition?

jpm2,

The time I reassembled a Delica incorrectly, there were no obvious gaps. I just noticed that the spring seemed to have lost most of its tension.

I'm not fully understanding your question...please clarify what you mean by "that way" and "this condition"

"that way" and "this condition" refers to the "small peg in on it that was pushed downward in the knife instead of fitting into the liner"

no gap visualized from the outside, but looking inside the liners with the blade open shows extra space from where the peg is misaligned from its hole in the liner due to the tension from the lockbar...have another delica that I have not fixed the issue in yet and will try to post a photo tomorrow before trying to fix it (hoping that the peg hasn't been destroyed)
