Hi Steelcity,

I think I would prefer to avoid any coatings. They add variables.

No worries Sal! While I am a blade coating junky, it certainly isn't a deal breaker! :)

Sal, you're amazing. I'll get a high hollow k390 delica for sure. :D

Just a random thought. I am all in for a supersteel. However, it’s the geometry I am solely after. So wouldn’t keeping the steel vg10 put this afi model in more afi hands who are seeking a performance boost from blade geometry, rather than users just looking for that supersteel fix? I understand that k390 or similar would add stability to a thin edge. Or would keeping vg10 also raise the risk of it not selling well? I don’t know. Like I said, just a random thought.

VG-10? No thanks. I think we need higher hardness and greater edge stability.

I don't think VG10 would work as well with such a thin hollow grind. Some of the tool steels will provide more edge stability and overall strength.

I understand. And like I said, I am all for a supersteel. I just know there’s going to be buyers of a “k390 Delica” without thought to the thin hollow grind, and its limitations. Then be upset when it fails at tasks a regular delica could handle. Not really sure what that could be though.
But now that I think about it more, that situation is more likely to happen with vg-10. :o

Why would VG-10 not work?
VG-10 is used in kitchen knives quite often and it could go to like 60-61 HRC. And, basically, what we want from this AFI knife is a kitchen knife like geometry.

Nobody said it wouldn't.

Centofante 3 is fairly close to what you guys are asking for here, stock. I used a krein reground Centofante as an EDC for a summer with no issues.

When it will be Delica, can it be a wharncliffe, please???? It's supposed to be an "high end cuting machine" and wharnie is ultimate work knife already. With higher end steel, very thin edge and overall geometry it will be even better.

Interesting idea. I think Michael Christy said something like this in his latest video (some gold class or special edition for the performance nuts). I voted yes.

Steel choice and potentially tweaking HT protocol would arguably be more necessary. You'd want something that is easy to HT for strength/stability on a production level. Spyderco's 4v comes to mind, which I've seen tested at 65HRC. The way they did k390 in the police (also 65 HRC) is a good candidate as well. Spyderco really seemed to knock those out of the park. They should be able to handle extremely thin geometry.

I don't think sales would be an issue.

K390 gets my vote! VG10 wouldn't get me excited at all.

I’ve looked at those. I just wish the grind was higher.

Edit:How much does a regrind typically cost for a knife like this?

It really needs to be more than what the Centofante is. While maybe a better slicer than a Native 5, it isn't anywhere near what a regrind can get me.

$30-40 back then. He did really good work. He was the one that opened my eyes to low grit edges. I bepieve he finished his edges on a 400 grit belt, and they push cut as well as anything else I had used at the time.
