Now they outlawed knitting on the plane...
Penetrating objects (such as scissors with pointed tips and knitting needles)

Those guys who make the laws should know that any possible object may become a weapon in an experienced hand. Even more, no object is necessary to a real pro, he has his body to fight with.
Who knows, maybe soon we'll have to travel tied up and wrapped in the name of those "safety reasons".

I've been weight training b/c of these new regs. If I can't have good toys with me, I may as well go down fighting and make it count.
They still allow flashlights, so my minimag makes a nice impact weapon. And when you have muscle to make it hurt like ****... well... I've been working on my speed with 20lb hand weights, and I'm just about as fast punching with the weights as without. the 15lbs are the same as without.

S&S> I can press 350lbs with my legs for endurance. Max(last time I tested it) is 400lbs. I bike and jog so I have no doubt as to possible damage from my feet, but there's not a lot of kicking room most of the time. I wear steel("safety"<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> toed army-boots(finally got a new pair)... upper body is my problem, so I've put in about 25-30hrs with my weights in the last week alone(I wasn't working so I had to do with my time). I can bruise with very little effort on my part with a punch.

Seriously, if someone were to even try and hijack a plane, that terroist would have quite a few people jumping on the guy and kicking the crap out of him. The passengers knows what is at risk so they will not be sitting on their hands while someone tries to pull another hijacking.
These measures are like buying a fire alarm after the house has burned down.

Sven> but I'm only 6' 185lbs 32" waist...
S&S> I haven't tested my max for 2yrs. I could probably do around 550-600 by now from all the jogging and biking I've done.
my upper body work is 110lbs freeweights, and 10 15 and 20lbs hand weights. I'd rather have lean muscle than large, and endurance is a big thing.

Shortly after 9/11 I heard a news bit that claimed the hijackers did not carry their 'box cutters' onboard themselves. There was allegation that they had help from ground crew, who placed the weapons on the planes before they were boarded.
The truth of how the weapons arrived onboard may be unknowable, but since that time, I haven't heard any follow-up.
IF the hijackers did not carry the weapons on board themselves, the current measures (preventing knitting needles, small knives, and toenail clippers from being carried on) would have NOT stopped the hijackers at all.
Regardless, it was the attitude towards hijacking that enabled them to take over the planes, not their weapons. A few people cannot take command of a planeload of passengers with just razorblades. My understanding is that they used the threat of a bomb on-board, as well as the attitude of cooperation, to reach their objectives.
Since 9/11, this would no longer be possible, not even if the hijackers carried guns. Passengers will NOT allow themselves to become cargo on a guided missile anymore. Anyone who hijacks a plane will be treated as if they had those intentions.
So security can be ordered to prevent us from carrying on metal spikes (like my marlinspike made from a 6" nail), and take away our pocket knives. Yet we can bring sharpened pencils, flashlights, steel-toed boots, even metal pens. Where is the logic in that? Anyone with the determination can train themselves on an 'allowable' weapon.
The main purpose of such measures is to give the appearance of something being done. I would prefer they spend that time, money, and energy preventing real dangers.

Just got back from a flight to & from AZ, and took along my really-handy metal pen. I misplaced it during my stay, and had to buy another at the gift shop PAST the security checkpoint. Not metal, but nice hand-filling polymer. It writes pretty well, too!
